⭐️⭐️ | Udupi Cafe, Karwar — Honest Review
I stopped at Udupi Cafe (Karwar) for a quick South-Indian breakfast and left disappointed.
What was good • Idli–Vada: Soft idlis and crisp vadas — quite nice and the best part of the meal.
What fell short • Masala Dosa: Strictly average; lacked the fresh, buttery crunch you expect from a good Udupi dosa. • Chutney: Didn’t taste fresh. • Sambar: Served cold and watery, which really pulled the experience down.
Billing issue (please read) • For 1 masala dosa, 1 idli-vada, and 1 tea, I was billed for 2 idli-vadas and 2 teas. • On pointing it out, the staff apologized and corrected the bill — but on re-checking we found I was still charged for 2 teas. It was finally corrected after a second review. • Tip: If you visit, thoroughly check your bill before paying.
Verdict I had high expectations for classic Udupi food in Karwar, but the cold sambar, not-so-fresh chutney, and repeated billing errors overshadowed the decent idli-vada. Service was polite and did fix the mistakes, yet the experience wasn’t confidence-inspiring.
Overall: 2/5 stars. Recommendation: Good for a quick bite if you’re already here, but the cafe needs to serve sambar hot, ensure chutney freshness, and tighten billing to earn...

If you’re ever on the Karwar highway and feel the pangs of hunger, let me save you the trouble: skip this place unless you’re keen on testing your patience or really like wasting time.
Picture this: around 12-15 tables of eager, hungry customers—all united in their collective mission to grab the attention of a waiter who might as well be a mythical creature. Waiters appeared to be always super busy.
After what seemed like an eternity, I finally managed to summon an elusive waiter, only to discover that the menu was more of a wish list. Almost everything was either unavailable or came with a 20-30 minute wait time—if, and only if, you were blessed enough to place an order.
Left with no choice, I ordered the lone survivor on the menu: Uppittu. Requested three plates, but, plot twist—they only had one. And then came the pièce de résistance: they split that solitary Uppittu into two plates. Genius move, truly. Sharing may be caring, but this was downright laughable.
On a serious note, avoid this place. Drink a tender coconut, or pack some Good day cookies or Parle-G or get a plate of Maggi, or cup...

The food is so pathetic. We had ordered Veg Kolapuri, Tandoori Roti and Jeera Rice.
Tandoori Roti was nice. No complaints.
Veg Kolapuri was not so good, it was spicy but the spiciness was not regular like how we taste usually I'm restaurants. This was a direct hit of red chilli powder.
Jeera Rice, very bad. It had no salt at all, was just like hospital food. Just bland. And they did not give dal with that, when asked for little dal, they said they'll give a whole plate of dal fry / tadka or raita which is chargeable. At the end, they gave sambar and charged 30 for that. This is the first time I had Jeera Rice and Sambar.
I am a regular outside eater and I know that Jeera Rice is accompanied with Dal. But in this restaurant, when I spoke with owner I came to know that they don't even give dal with Ghee rice.
Service and food quality needs a great improvement. People visit this restaurant because it's on highway and also by seeing "Udupi" in restaurant name, having some expectations set which is definitely crushed by...
