Munnar city centre really has just a handful of places that, according to Google reviews, promise a chill ambience plus interesting food and beverage options.
We found ourselves at Tea Tales Cafe, at 13h50 on a Saturday, hoping for a quick bite and a beverage, relying on these Google reviews.
Unfortunately, no place on our trip to Kerala disappointed us more than Tea Tales Cafe!
Ambience: After you climb a flight of narrow, dingy stairs, you walk past stores on the first floor, and arrive at the cafe. While the exterior is literally overlooking a hullabaloo of street noises and pollution, the interior is out of a Pinterest board, making it an instagrammable place in appearance.
Facilities: There is a hand washing area. No toilet. No wifi.
Food and beverages: we were first given a printed menu followed by a chalkboard with handwritten specials for the day. The lady taking order was then quick to point out that only frozen-fried food and mostly fish and meat were available. There was no fresh veg food or non-frozen anything available. When asked about sandwich options, she asked a man, who one could only guess was the cook? and he mumbled sometjing about toast sandwich being an option. Disappointed at the lack of options in food, we thought we'd try an iced/cold tea, so we ordered butterfly /blue pea tea.
Evidence of what we were served is in the photos. Tap water temperature tea pot with 1/2 tsp of butterfly pea tea in the strainer and white bread, mayonnaise filled sandwich. We waited for the tea to change color to its beautiful blue but clearly whoever made it had never heard of steeping tea in hot water and refrigerating it to then serve it as cold tea. We informed the lady about how what was served didn't qualify as either hot tea or cold tea and explained how it is supposed to be served. Not sure if anything was understood, but we made sure it's clear that we hadn't touched the tea pot and weren't going to pay for it.
By this time, we had no energy left to bother with service or food. We just wanted to pay for what tried to be a sandwich and get out of there to go to a place with actual edible food and drinkable beverages.
Bottomline, may be we got unlucky or may be we experienced the reality and most 5 star reviews are by their friends or paid for; one...
Read moreIt was a real shocking experience had at Tea Tales. Never ever till date found the managing and serving staff so confused about their own menu they serve. Okk. So let's begin the great review about this place. Though visited this place after going through great reviews about this place but all those expectations came crashing down when experienced personally. We Ordered Chicken burger - One of the worst ever made and tasted burger in my life,The bread was stale and hard as stone. Literally we were not able to take the bite of burger it was that hard. Called the poor managing guy and displayed the hardness of bread by beating on the table amd even then it didn't break. The guy didn't had any satisfactory reason for that and he said this is because of Munnar weather. He should have given a thought at least before giving that reply. Anyhow kept the Burger half eaten aside. Next comes our order from SHAKES menu. We ordered Coffee Choclate. To our surprise again the shake turned out to be hot Choclate. Literally burnt my tongue as I was expecting to be cold coffee Choclate shake. Again the poor guy was called upon to please confirm the order we placed and he has served us. He was almost speechless but even then he managed to say Sir it is written choco coffee so it has to be hot. I asked then why it is written with all other cold dishes under the Shakes menu, where as they have separate menu heading for different types of hot coffee. This time again he stood speechless without any answer. He went backside in the kitchen and started discussing their menu with the so be called Chef. Anyhow on the good side of this visit was that the ambience is cool. The mocktails were great as well as the Chicken masti roll (Thank god) at least our total money paid didn't go waste. In future definitely will visit this again, but that time I will request the chef to be there to understand what we need to order so that we get the right dish/drinks. But regarding Burger even if there is buy one get one free offer I will dare not give a try. Hope the management guys take serious note of my review and should give a thought about running there place for long time and in...
Read moreI recently had the unfortunate experience of visiting Tea Tales, and I must say it was an absolute disaster. From the moment I walked in, I could feel a heavy cloud of disappointment looming over the cafe. The ambiance was downright depressing, with dim lighting and worn-out furniture that seemed to have been salvaged from a thrift store reject pile.
Let's start with the service, or should I say lack thereof? The staff seemed completely disinterested in their jobs, as if they were doing me a favor by even acknowledging my presence. I had to wait an eternity for someone to take my order, and when they finally did, they managed to get it wrong. The level of incompetence was truly astounding.
Now, let's talk about the so-called "tea" they serve. I'm no connoisseur, but I know when I'm being served a subpar beverage. The tea at Tea Tales tasted like nothing more than dirty dishwater infused with a hint of bitterness. It was lukewarm, flavorless, and had a strange aftertaste that lingered unpleasantly in my mouth. It's safe to say that I won't be seeking out their tea expertise anytime soon.
As for the food, well, if you can call it that, I wouldn't even feed it to my worst enemy. The menu boasted a variety of options, but what arrived on my plate was an unappetizing mess. The presentation was sloppy, and the flavors were completely unremarkable. It was as if they had taken the cheapest ingredients they could find and haphazardly thrown them together without any regard for taste or quality.
To top it all off, the prices at Tea Tales were exorbitant considering the dismal quality they offered. I felt like I was being robbed as I handed over my hard-earned money for an experience that was anything but enjoyable.
In conclusion, Tea Tales is a place I would strongly advise against visiting. The lackluster service, abysmal tea, mediocre food, and outrageous prices combine to create an experience that can only be described as soul-crushing. Save yourself the agony and choose any other cafe in town – you'll...
