Quintessential Biryani & Kebabs maintaining all hygiene & safety measures @ India Restaurant.!
There is something about Biryani, a one pot meal which has always made us succumb to its temptations and making us surrender to its beckoning; an ultimate enlightenment for a glutton, falling prey to its aroma and surrendering to its flavour profiles. What remains debatable though, is the fine line of difference between a Biryani and a Pulao/Pilaf, something which is still considered to be of utmost mystery among gastronomists. Truly giving meaning to the phrase of a ‘diversified country’, the taste and make of a Biryani also gets varied as you move from one state to another in this country. What remains uncontested though, is the very essence of a Biryani in itself.
Kolkata Biryani as such has always been close to our heart. Subtle and light spices giving meaning to our flavour palettes, with a simple addition of our beloved potato, and sometimes may be throwing in an egg to complete the meal. India Restaurant has always been a flagbearer of holding the standards high, by dishing out some amazing varieties of Biryanis cooked by their experts in the kitchen. Located near Fancy Market in Khidderpore, a tall multi-storied building now stands, to offer their patrons a sense of fine dining, apart from a regular walk-in concept, if you just prefer the hustle and bustle of the regular flees.
A quick visit post the lockdown session, it was quite a treat to the eyes indulging in those quintessential flavours, along with the additional assurance of a safe and hygienic surroundings maintained by the management. Head caps, disposable gloves and regular temperature checks was a treat to the eyes but perhaps more satisfaction to the discerning brain caught in the concerns of the ongoing scare. The tables are kept apart, maintaining strict distance norms. What remained unchanged were the flavours we flung our way into, all the way from the other side of this city. Some quick Biryani, melting Kebabs, refreshing mocktails and sumptuous desserts literally won our hearts over.
The Awadhi Biryani was subtle, honoring the spices and lineages of our very own Kolkata Biryani, and as the legend goes of being the origin to what we hold so dear to our heart. Quantity sufficient for 2 heads, this comprised of some good 4 portions of Mutton of varying sizes. The only modification to this Biryani was the addition of the succulent potatoes, something which has become an indispensable portion of the heritage and culture of the Biryani scene in Kolkata. And then there were the fried onions, which imparted a slight sweet texture over the rustic flavours of the Mutton and the decadent aromas of the potatoes.
The Galawati Kebabs were a serious throwback to the food scenes at Lucknow. Soft, melt in the mouth kebabs, with a mix of countless spices. Some say it is well around 40/50 easily, the secret to which is known to a very few. Quite hard and difficult to the get the balance right, which otherwise would make these Kebabs very coarse for our palettes to digest the flavours. Squeeze in a dash of lime, and scoop a portion of these kebabs onto the flaky Lucknowi Paratha or the Ulte Tawa ka Paratha. A serene and sublime experience, it is very hard to describe how one feels, other than passing on the torch of beckoning to someone else reading this pen down of the divine experience.
Some quick mocktails on the likes of Shirley Temple and Deep Blue Sea, before finishing our meal with Firni and Sahi Tukda, the latter of which has been my favorite since ages now. The perfect balance of sweetness, not overdoing on the frying part; this sweet dish can transport you any day straight to heaven. With two souls walking in with a lot of concerns relating to hygiene and safety factors, what came out were two gluttons satisfied with the meal, slowly caressing their tummies, eagerly awaiting the next visit!

Read moretGet Royal treatment at India Restaurant Khidirpore. One of the legendary names when it comes to Kolkata Biryani. It has already gained a huge popularity because of its great Mughlai, North Indian cuisine . Spices get their right values when they are on the hands of Chefs of India Restaurant . Be their outstanding biryanis or kebabs , there isn't much new to say about . If you haven't still visited this place then you must have missed something good .
Located at Khidirpore close to fancy market , this place stands right in front of the main road and attracts thousands of guests per day . This place can be easily accessed from Exide or Hazra via bus. The 3 storied building has so much astonishment stored for you . Every corner of this place has a royal touch except the non AC section at the bottom . Starting from the lights to the spotless cutlery placed on the tables , everything will make you believe that you have travelled to some amazing place to have you meal.
As soon as I entered the place , the aroma of Biryani came flying to me and i got transported to somewhere else. If you think Biryanis come with a lot of spices and oil , it's the time to toss your misconceptions into flame . The light biryani rice with the juicy succulent Mutton piece that could be easily tore down with a slight touch of the fork along with a buttery chunk of whole potato was served on the plate. And of course the boiled egg played the side role . A full plate of special kolkata biryani contains two mutton /chicken pieces with a whole potato and an egg. Fair enough deal for a full grown up.
And how can i miss their kebabs . Got to try a few namely the reshmi kebab and the Kasturi kebab. The reshmi kebab had boneless chicken chunks with a traditional marination of yogurt or curd flawlessly grilled over the tandoor and was served with green chutney . It was a sheer delight to the tastebuds.
The Kasturi kebab on the other hand was a kebab preparation with bones. It had rustic look with grill marks over the chicken pieces completely different from the former . I personally prefer kebabs without bones but felt to give it a try which i dont regret at all. This was also good if not outstanding.
Also had their Kabuli naan with tawa chicken . The chicken preparation being very simple and resembled home cooked chicken kosha preparation. The Kabuli naan was literally outstanding. I haven't tasted a better Kabuli naan before . The finely chopped nuts, raisins , fennel seeds and other elements married very well on the Kabuli naan. It had the perfect balance of sweetness in it.
Chocolate shake helped me quench my thirst during my meal . Every sip of it had great flavours of chocolate and milk of course . I know not many thinks of having a chocolate shake with Mughlai cuisine but my experiment was successful .
Finally nobody can say no to desserts after a wholesome meal. Hence ended our meal with the quintessential Sahi tukda and firni. The Sahi tukda , deep fried bread immersed in a sugary surup with the flavours of kesar was delicious yet the firni stole the show. One of the best firnis of Kolkata that too at such low price. It had the perfect consistency and colour and hence our meal ended in the best...
