Location & ambience • Gallops is located inside the Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai, which gives it a uniquely lush, open-green backdrop uncommon in the city’s dining scene. • The décor and setting combine colonial charm with upscale comfort: for example, walnut-floors, candle-light chandeliers, and equestrian-themed décor post-revamp. • Outdoor and al-fresco dining is one of its strong suits — especially nice in cooler months.
Food quality & menu variety • The menu successfully blends Indian and Continental dishes. From traditional kebabs and curries to refined European-style mains, there’s something for varied tastes. • Signature dishes that get strong mentions: • “Dori Kebab” (mutton or chicken) – minced, skewered and charcoal-cooked. • “Chicken Ala Kiev” with cheese/butter-filled centre, as a refined European choice. • Desserts are also strong: Baked Alaska and newer additions like Baileys Caramel Cloud. • Many reviewers emphasize the generous portions, good presentation and a sense of value for a fine-dining venue.
Service & experience • The service is frequently praised: attentive staff, good recommendations (e.g., for wine or pairings), smooth reservation experience when booked in advance. • The overall dining experience is described as memorable— especially when everything aligns (good table, nice view, well-timed service). For example: “What a wonderful restaurant from the minute we arrived the staff were so efficient and helpful, the food was absolutely incredible.”
Ideal for special occasions / date nights • The ambience, décor and location make it ideal for anniversaries, special dinners or when you want to treat yourself. Many mentions of formative visits, nostalgic moments, photo-friendly setting.
If I were picking one restaurant for a refined Mumbai meal — especially if you’re after something more than just dinner but an experience — Gallops checks a lot of boxes: • A setting that feels premium yet relaxed. • A menu that offers both familiar Indian comfort and elevated Continental touches. • Good enough service to let you focus on the evening rather than logistics. • A chance to dine in one of Mumbai’s less-hustle zones (given the race-course setting) while still being accessible.
If you ask me: go for the outdoor or window-view table (book ahead), order one of the signature starters + a main you haven’t tried, and finish with one of the classic desserts. Pair with a good wine...
Read moreGallops is my Favourite date night restaurant. Whenever I’m in India I love to visit. After nearly two years we decided to visit it as it was our Anniversary. The whole city was celebrating Ganpathi Visarjan and we just wanted to celebrate our Anniversary and what better place than Gallops… Being the last day of Ganpathi visarjan we were also being careful where to go so we don’t get stuck. My husband made a reservation and spoke to Shruti. She seemed to be very impatient on the call. My husband asked if we could reserve a table for two at 9pm. But she said in a loud tone there are two slots which we didn’t understand as we were going in for an A la carte dinner. She added first slot is till 9pm and second till 22:30. When we asked her to explain she was a bit impatient. We decided not to argue as we didn’t want to ruin our day. Nevertheless we booked in for 20:30 and she was informed it was our anniversary.
When we reached the restaurant I noticed the cabanas were empty. When we asked if we could avail of the cabanas the waiters standing on the lawn stated there is no alcohol and repeated twice. I waited for my husband to return as he had gone into the restaurant to check where could we sit. We then opted for the cabanas.
The cabanas were outstandingly private. Perfect for an anniversary dinner. Ambience was on point. We ordered for the dori kebab and a prawn dish. While indulging in the prawn. I noticed a little visitor (mouse) enter the cabana. I freaked out. It moved under my sofa and I was out of the cabana. I quickly informed the staff about the mouse. Who later mentioned they had placed a mouse trap in the cabana but the mouse isn’t getting trapped. My question is I understand it’s on a race course but if there is a mouse hanging around why was the cabana alotted??
Nevertheless, We were moved to another cabana and we enjoyed the evening without any interruptions.
To conclude we asked if we could have the baileys caramel cloud and if they could write Happy Anniversary on the plate but they couldn’t accommodate it. I asked the staff 3 times to check with the chef but he was adamant and said not possible. Almost making one feel that one doesn’t even want to try. Nevertheless, they were kind enough to put a candle. One of the staff also got some good pictures of us thus making the anniversary not only eventful but...
Read moreHere we go again—another oldie but a goodie! Gallops is one of those institutions that has managed to hold its place in Mumbai’s dining scene for ages. It definitely has a charm that’s hard to replicate anywhere else, largely because it overlooks the sprawling Mahalaxmi Race Course lawns. Not bad for a view, right?
Let’s talk food. Gallops menu will surely make you feel nostalgic with classics like Thermidor, Stroganoff, and the iconic Baked Alaska dessert. Over the years, they’ve evolved their menu to keep up with changing times but have also retained enough classic dishes for loyal patrons to enjoy their favorites.
What I Ate and Drank:
Piquante (Tequila Cocktail): This was a nice twist on a cocktail. A tad sweeter than I usually prefer, but still enjoyable.
Channa and Sprout Salad: A perfect accompaniment to drinks—healthy, fresh, and very flavorful.
Pathar Ghosht: An amazing mutton appetizer! Highly recommend this if you’re a mutton fan. The marinade was delightful, giving it the texture and flavor of a kebab just before it becomes a Galouti.
Chicken Stroganoff: Served with veggies, fries, and herb rice, this dish is best shared as it’s quite heavy. While a bit on the bland side, it remains a continental classic.
Prawns Thermidor: A rich, cheesy dish that was tasty but slightly overwhelming with cheese for my taste. The addition of eggs wasn’t my favorite, but that’s just my personal preference.
Yakhni Pulao: This pulao is truly underrated in the world of biryanis and pulaos. The spices blend perfectly with the rice and meat. DO ORDER THIS—you’ll thank me later!
Baileys Caramel Cake: A newer addition to their menu, this dessert adds a bit of theater to your dining experience. The Baileys-flavored cake with its caramel filling is delicious and fun to watch being served.
Overall:
Gallops is an easy choice for a family dinner. Do note that they have two seatings and are particular about you finishing on time. Reservations are highly recommended.
Extra Tip: There’s a popular paan stall right outside Gallops. While I don’t eat paan, my companions raved about it, calling it...
