At least in the last 3-4 trips to Madurai over the last 4 years, we have always stopped in Salem Selvi Mess for lunch if we were non-vegetarian that day. This time around we stopped here and this is the first time wifey and daughter were trying the food from here. While there are a few outlets in Salem, this outlet in Reddipatti Main Road on National Highway (NH)-44 is easy to access while heading to Coimbatore or Madurai from Bangalore. we got space to sit soon and ordered a non-veg meal with an extra vanjaram fish fry, mutton sukka and chicken 65 to accompany, while picking up a kuska biryani for daughter and to be shared between the three of us. While I have had their seeraga samba short grain rice mutton biryani which is flavourful and excellent in my earlier visits, the kuska is essentially the same rice without the meat pieces. It was very good and we enjoyed it with both the mutton sukka and the chicken boneless 65. The non-veg meals essentially come with a kootu and poriyal with unlimited rice and instead of sambar it had mutton, chicken and fish gravies without any meat pieces, instead of sambar and kuzhambu. At roughly about 150 rupees it was a good deal, and tasted very authentic and spicy, very true to Salem's kongu micro cuisine. While I was not able to differentiate much between the chicken and mutton gravies, the fish gravy was distinct, mildly sour and well made. Chicken 65 was on point, the standard deal with no connection to the kongu cuisine, but as a popular side it has to be there on the menu. The vanjaram fish fry was decent, but it was not fresh, as Salem is nowhere close to the sea and it definitely must be transported / frozen for a day, lesson learnt we may not order this next time. I did enjoy the semi gravy mutton sukka with the rice which was extremely well made, the slightly pepper heavy kongu masalas did proper justice to the wonderfully cooked meat, which was a bit fatty, instead of pure meat that one would expect in a sukka. This fantastic meal ended with a nice rasam and rice, which was very tangy and literally woke me up. It may not be a right decision to eat a heavy meal and drive, but the pure hygienic home style Tamil Nadu Kongu style food is a wonderful highway travel recommendation that you should not miss, do pick up a coffee or an extra serving of rasam to drink to stay awake. Definitely recommended for anyone passing through NH-44. The washrooms are ok, hygienic and clean, but we would stop in a...

I visited this place after seeing all reviews but absolutely not worth. We were traveling back from yearcaud and decided that even late we are eating in selvi mess. Poor Hospitality - I visited at 3.30pm on a Sunday and it was crowded and hence told supplier will be waiting in entrance waiting area but he said you will have to find a table as soon as some other diners gets up. Basically a customer should play kho kho or stand next to tables where people are already eating. This is soo poor approach rather they should introduce some token system and allow the people to eat freely until they are finished and call the people who are on queue.

Food - this is the most unacceptable part and not live by the reviews. Chicken biryani was very okaish and not even close to good. They give one leg piece which will be tasteless and not juicy. A BIG no to chicken biryani if you are a biryani lover. Note -Best biryani is an art and selvi mess biryani is not even better than home biryani and absolutely not worth it.there is absolutely not a single good thing to talk about their biryani I learened they are in food service over 40yrs but it doesn't reflect on the quality. We ordered mutton sukka and pepper dry and the mutton was very hard and difficult to chew. Didn't expect this inferior quality food is served in such reputed place I think only meals is the best option here and nothing else as we spotted most eating meals. We also ordered chicken items which again is not of great taste because of compromised quality meat .Kooks like they were good before and not now. Bear in mind price is not less for this kind of food. I wouldn't recommend this place and none of my friends were satisfied with food. Imagine how awkward it would feel to stand beside a table where people are already eating just to occupy next and finally end with dissatisfaction due to inferior food. This...

Rating 4.5/5 After recommendations from my Bangalore Foodie circle, we decided to go on a short trip to Yeracud with the primary objective of "Lunch At Salem" and the first name on the list was "Selvi Mess". There are multiple branches, this one is the closest to the Bangalore Highway, while entering the city it's on your left with abundant parking! Whereas if you're leaving the city due to on-going road construction you will have to take a long u-turn twice! We reached around 1pm on Saturday - They have an AC Hall, lots of service, absolutely humble managers who quickly brought the plantain leaf and recommended orders as well - Mr. Charles told us to go for Mutton Nalli (mutton leg) Fry and of course the Chicken and Mutton Biryani coupled with chicken 65. Typically wherever we've gone we only received 1 or max 2 pieces of Nalli as they are scarce and premium items, but here we had 6 legs served and each of them cooked to perfection the masala coating, the juicy meat and a thoughtful broken-bone serving made this a crazy gastro burst! This is a true 5/5. The Biryani were as usual good - perfect quantity the Mutton (5/5) had multiple pieces whereas the chicken (4/5) had 1 large piece the chicken 65 (4.5/5) was again cooked well and it goes well with the falvourful chicken biryani. Overall service is quick, food is delicious and worth a try.
