Virunthombal Chettinadu is a true gem for lovers of authentic South Indian cuisine. The food was absolutely outstanding, and every dish was a celebration of Chettinad flavors. My friends especially enjoyed the fresh seafood options—each preparation bursting with rich, bold spices and cooked to perfection.

The vegetarian options were equally impressive. The flaky, melt-in-your-mouth parottas paired beautifully with the flavorful vegetable curries. Each bite reflected the chef’s mastery in balancing spices, making it a satisfying experience for vegetarians as well.

What truly elevated our dining experience was the impeccable service provided by Mr Palini. He was attentive, courteous, and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. His warm hospitality made the meal even more enjoyable.

The ambiance of the restaurant, combined with the excellent food and service, made this a memorable outing. Whether you're craving seafood, vegetarian delights, or classic Chettinad specialties, Virunthombal Chettinadu is a must-visit destination.

Highly recommended for a flavorful and fulfilling dining experience!

The restaurant is conveniently located right on the main road, making it very easy to find and access. To top it off, there’s ample parking space, which adds to the convenience and makes the visit hassle-free.

Also, Don’t miss the sweet beeda sold at the shop outside the restaurant—it was absolutely amazing! A perfect way to end the meal with a...

Virunthombal's Recipe for Disappointment: An Unforgettable Fish Disaster

I recently had the unfortunate experience of dining at Virunthombal, where I ordered the whole Koduva fish, a dish I had high hopes for. What I received was a culinary catastrophe that will not be easily forgotten.

The fish arrived half-cooked, drenched in a masala that tasted as if it was an afterthought. The dish was not just underwhelming; it was a complete disaster. I couldn't help but wonder if the chef had forgotten to turn on the stove or if they believed "medium rare" applied to fish as well.

It's clear that Virunthombal is losing both its momentum and its grasp on quality. The lack of attention to detail and the sheer negligence in preparation were astounding. If this is their idea of a signature dish, I shudder to think what their other offerings are like.

In conclusion, if you're in the mood for disappointment, by all means, order the Koduva fish at Virunthombal. Otherwise, save your money and your taste buds and...

The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy and welcoming, but there were a few areas for improvement. While the menu offered a decent variety of dishes, some of the items lacked the flavor and presentation we were expecting. The food was served at a reasonable pace, though a couple of dishes arrived lukewarm. The prices were on the higher side for the overall quality, which slightly dampened the experience.

However, the highlight of our visit was the service provided by Anjali. She was incredibly attentive, warm, and knowledgeable about the menu. Anjali made sure our drinks were always topped up, and she checked in on us just the right amount without being intrusive. Her positive attitude and professionalism truly stood out and made our dining experience more enjoyable. Thanks to her, we left with a smile despite the shortcomings in other areas.

If you visit, I highly recommend asking for Anjali as your server—she will ensure you're well...

The restaurant has spacious parking, which is a big plus, especially in Mahabalipuram. The seating, however, feels quite cramped, and though they have AC cabins on all four corners, the overall ambience could be improved for a more pleasant dining experience. Coming to food, the dishes were average overall. The biryani was just okay, not something that stood out. The kola was the highlight — absolutely top notch and worth trying. The vanjaram tasted fine, but felt a bit overpriced. In terms of service, for a place carrying the name Virunthombal (which translates to hospitality), the experience was not particularly appealing or warm. Overall, it’s a place with potential — decent for a one-time visit, especially if you’re driving in and need convenient parking — but improvements in ambience, service, and consistency of dishes would make it more memorable.

This is located on the Chennai- Mahabalipuram- Pondicherry highway, very close to the the road turn off to Mahabalipuram. We drove in for lunch after a long road trip. The place has basic infrastructure but it is neat and nicely maintained. There is ample parking in front of the restaurant and the security person is smiling and helpful! The food - every item that we ordered -was amazingly tasty, much beyond our expectations. We had ordered fresh lime juice, chicken curry, mutton roast, chapatis and rice. The dessert was, mixed fruit faluda which was delicious too. The table server Ms Anjali was very attentive, efficient and courteous. Would recommend this place for a meal stop over for all travellers on this route.
