Based on the reviews for the restaurant we decided to go there for dinner when we were in Pemuteran.
The open dining area is separated from the main road by a green garden area, which shields it from the traffic noise. The dining area is clean, comfortable and well laid out. The staff are friendly and welcoming.
The menu is predominately vegetarian and vegan focused, mainly rice, salad and noodle bowls - IDR60K (thought if you pay extra you can get grilled chicken or grilled fish on the side - IDR10K). They have some curries, mostly vegetarian - IDR75K. The other alternative is their burgers - IDR85K.
The burgers sound good but are fairly basic (the burgers at Lakawi are so much better and cheaper). The salad bowls all sound very trendy and look intriguing (try Eco Taste, again better and cheaper). The servings are all on the small side, particularly given the price.
The juices we had: Sparkling Sage, Cranberry fizz, Apple fizz - IR 28,000, were all fairly watery and lacked any fruit taste.
Most of the deserts were unavailable, except for the vegan lemon cake squares - IDR25K, which were dry and crumbly, maybe some more lemon icing might have helped; and the chocolate cake - IDR30K. I'm almost glad that desert servings were so small.
To be honest if I was a vegan or vegetarian this restaurant would have been a revelation however, I'm not and it was a...
Read moreAfter reading the reviews I was so excited to eat here. I ordered the carnivore (meatball sandwich) and a drink (I forgot the name but it was some apple soda). Unfortunately my meal was pretty disappointing mainly because the bread used was stale and there were only four meatballs in the entire sandwich. My drink was also disappointing because there wasn’t much taste to the drink and it came with the ice cubes pretty much already melted.
On thé plus side the meatballs were flavourful and the service was great.
As The Sage is a bit more expensive than a nearby cafe, I had high expectations as my experience with all the restaurants within the area have been great. Unfortunately my expectations were not met :(
From the other reviews it seems like my situation was an outlier but I did not return to give it another try. Hopefully your experience will...
Read moreProbably the best restaurant in Bali. The kind of restaurant worth a pilgrimage. 🙏🏻The owner, a welcoming German who masters indian, balinese and southeast asian cuisine, is a true chef. The plates are generous and nutritious. The roasted vegetables are so meaty that I forgot it was vegan. The curry (When India meets Bali) was a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The vegetables of the bowls are perfectly cooked and enhanced by a tangy dressing (try the pinch of yum, a vietnamese-style bowl). Finally, if you are craving good bread, try the Vegan Vitality, a sandwich with wholegrain baguette and sweet and sour veggies. I was born and raised in France from a food loving family so when it comes to food, i'm very picky. But I must say that I was mind blown by your cuisine.
