You have not experienced Indonesian life until you have planted yourself in the middle of a Durian shop like Ucok Durian Medan to become part of the general atmosphere and, yes, partake of the beloved durian. Cash payments only. Gift shop on site that has great t-shirts and other Medan-related souvenirs and accepts cash & credit cards & e-wallet payments. If you aren't coming to have durian, don't bother coming.

People are divided over their favorite durian shop, and there are passionate advocates and defenders on both sides. Ucok comes highly recommended and it did not disappoint. But it's a busy place so be prepared to be quick on your feet when they direct you to a table and quick to leave once you've had your fill of durian - likely someone is waiting to take your place.

Plastic gloves are provided to prevent the pungent durian fruit from getting on your skin. While Indonesians scoff at such things (they like the smell and love to show off to their friends and family the next day that they enjoyed the King of Fruit the night before!), I recommend it until you have developed the same passionate love of durian.

There's water to drink and perhaps a few other things but durian is the main show here. Eat dinner somewhere else, just come here for durian. It's not cheap, but a group of four of us enjoyed a smaller durian for less than $6 USD. That's generally enough for Westerners. Highly recommended to come with an Indonesian who will be only too happy to finish whatever durian the tourists aren't willing or able to eat. Sweet or 'garlic' durian available and your server will ask you which you want.

Service is quick and not heavy on formalities or pleasantries. They're there to get you the durian you want, open it for you, assist in further separations of the fruit as you deem necessary, and certainly to laugh at any tourists who wander in. It's all part of the experience - go with it!

Afterwards the gift shop has some great mementos of your time eating durian, visiting Medan, and stopping over in Sumatra as a whole.

Judging from the name Ucok Durian, originally people thought that the owner is a Batak. Apparently not. The owner is not a Batak but a native child of Medan.

Excellent service! (The kind of service you could expect from durian dealer, dont get me wrong) The price is IDR 40-50k each. And they will happily help to choose and crack open the durians for you. There are varieties of them durians and i love the 'bitter-sweet' the most Worry not, if your durian is tastes plain or rotten. You can always ask for a replace. Free of charge. I had one of my durian has one section that rotten (1 durian consist of 5 to 7 section, 1-4 piece each section. The rotten piece is only one section. The rest is fine), i showed the seller and he quickly pick a whole new one with the better taste. No hassle

There's large space for 100 people and There's literally ATM machine for BNI and Mandiri inside. You can also bring back some durian in neat packaging (150k-550k per package) that can pass airport baggage (dont bring it into cabin!).
