Read moreDined there with my sister and elderly friend for lunch. It started off promisingly enough. We got a lovely corner table in the conservatory overlooking the river so we had a great view and a sense of privacy. The starters weren't too bad. My sister & I shared a bowl of spicy chicken wings. Not the nicest sauce I've ever tasted but still they were tasty enough, a stick or 2 of celery would have complemented it. My friend felt her pate was too salty and served with so much bread it reminded her "of a ploughman's lunch".
This is not a place you go for exotic and unusual food; wasn't my choice; so I had difficulty choosing a main course I couldn't easily cook at home. Perplexed I decided to eventually choose what the other 2 were having: chicken & mushroom vol au vents with chips and salad (I went for raw onion). Boy did we regret it. Soon as I took one look at the food I knew it wasn't up to par but said nothing to see what my companions would say. It didn't take long for the complaints to be voiced, horrible pastry, big pieces of chicken with a small bone in it, stodgy, bland sauce and unbalanced food. Do the chefs here taste the food before they serve it? While my sister really enjoyed the thick chips myself and my friend would much rather have had thin ones. The raw onions looked and smelt like they were one stage from being inedible. Dry with an unpleasant taste it was obvious they were past their heyday and probably sitting around the kitchen a long time. Worse it's not the first time I've had that experience here. I love raw onions so nothing gets past me with them!
I complained to the unsmiling waitress who had a fed up manner though she offered to change our meals & only charge us any extra. I took up her offer and ordered plaice with mash. In the meantime I called over a less than tactful manager to our remarks and offered to take the 2 mains off the tab after they again refused his offer of a replacement meal. After an eternity (we were in a hurry) the plaice arrived with chips and not the mash I ordered and the far from fresh onions. The plaice was tasty enough, I should have ordered it n the first place.
The food here feels like it's hurriedly come off a conveyor belt; mass produced to serve the masses without much thought. The manager commented to my friends about the numbers they had to serve which vindicated my suspicions for the reason for this well below par and way below restaurant standard meal even for pub grub. Shame because 2 of us being locals we have enjoyed many good meals and wonderful obliging, smiling service there before. This meal though marred what should have been a special day for us and left a bad taste...
Read moreLeaving a bad review unfortunately as the food and staff are lovely appart from Eddie the manager that really lets the place down, Really Really Really rude I have never had someone be so rude to me and my two young sons in a pub before ever! I can only imagine the way he treats his staff? My family has gone to the dropping well for many years and have given a lot of business to them and I dont usually leave reviews but under the circumstances I wanted to point out how bad Eddie treated us. We sat down at a table which did not have a reservation card on it after carefully checking nearly every other table that was reserved in the pub. Me and my two young sons sat down at a small table in the corner of the bar but then were told by Eddie that we could not sit there and we were told to get out very rudely even though there was no reserve card on the table. We stood there in the middle of the crowd even though the table was not being used for about 20mins. I questioned Eddie why we could not sit there? Eddie just said oh there’s people coming to watch the match so I said well if it’s reserved why doesn’t it say it’s reserved? We would not have sat there in the first place? and please don’t be so rude about it, he then proceeded to come towards me right up to my face and said I’m definitely not going to find you a table now just being completely rude and ignorant no idea why? I’m sure you will see this on camera if there is any? The only reason I can come up with is that I had the kids with me and he didn’t want them there but it was only 2.30, 3 lunchtime, I only wanted a quick drink and chips for the kids as they were really hungry after a long walk in the park and I told him we would only be 15 mins max, he said no, After waiting 20mins with everyone walking around us watching the unoccupied table we finally found a table with no help from Eddie, but to be honest after dealing with Eddie and his rude behavior we didn’t even enjoy the food or drink that we had been looking forward to during our long walk there, me and my 2 kids felt very unwelcome there and my kids were upset it ruined our whole day we won’t be going back and I will be telling my extended family with their kids not to go back either as clearly it’s not a child friendly pub after my...
