I have avoided posting review since visiting on Chinese New Year. I don't like to eviscerate any business bouncing back from CoViD, with War Inflation. But I am just haunted by the shocking quality of the food served on, admittedly, that very busy night. And the exorbitant cost, for the shockingly bad quality - it's just not on! I cant fail to review. I have never come across such atrocious meat, for such a price, anywhere in Ireland. I am simultaneously blown away by the profoundly positive reviews....on food quality, of all things. And it's such a pity because the Hostess and Service Staff were excellent. The serviceware was fantastic, every little detail. The decor is lovely, bathroom upstairs - also well decorated. But many of us at the table were just so disappointed in the food standards, meats in particular.
Foolishly, perhaps, I ordered a "Japanese" meal. Teriyaki, my love, is not "toss a bucket of soy on that". But setting the many failures to present anything resembling a Teriyaki-Soba Noodle meal aside, the chicken - across many persons' meals - was rubbery and tasted "off". Gordon Ramsey would have a field day here. That battered chicken was likely frozen, and potentially for many months if not beyond the count of "months" (or, perhaps, just very, very low quality British or American poultry).
I sincerely hope that this was a rare occurrence due to an exceptionally busy night. And that they cease the extortionate pricing of customers, in favour of higher turnover. Because this business is facing into a near future of financing a major refurbishment, not mere decoration. It's flooring on both levels is severely weakened, presumably from damp rot/rising damp. To such an extent that the movement under bathroom floor tiles upstairs has started causing them to crack and the grouting to crumble. In addition to which, the ground floor "bar" has a the stench of a chronic plumbing fault. Not saying its a structural danger or anything. But they are going to need to accept that their building is going to cause them serious problems, very soon, if it hasn't begun for them already. I hope they own the building and are not subject to Landlord prevarications on maintenance and repairs.
I can see that maybe, probably, this was a high-end, high quality, business at one time. With class and style and customer-centric service. I'm sure it...
Read moreThere for a birthday and the service was disappointing, scattered and food quality was average. At the start, one of our party asked for a glass with no ice and our server simply poured the ice into another glass and poured bottled water in on ice water. Some of the food was very tasty but not very warm. My starter was spare ribs and they were exactly that... spare. Very little if any meat on two pieces and the third piece was mostly fat. I got Duck with plum sauce and it was very poor. Plum sauce was bland and the duck was mostly fat, no seasoning from what I could make out and only 2 of the 8 crispy pieces had much meat on it. One service staff was not welcoming at all, never smiled, didn't seem to listen when communicating and confused our orders throughout our time there. The rest of the staff didn't seem to want to be there. Orders were written down on very small yellow post-it notes for a big group. Desserts are the same in most Chinese restaurants. Same suppliers... So nothing different or to write home about. The coffees and teas were poor and we had to go out to staff a number of times with missing drinks, missing food and desserts. Members of our party at every step of the way were left sitting and waiting for food. The coffees were vending machine quality. I was very disappointed and hope it improves. I have been to Yangs in the past but the quality and service has deteriorated. The setting is lovely, the ambience and atmosphere is very relaxing and traditional... But the food quality and service did not match and very expensive for such quality that was delivered (eventually)...
Read moreFour of us visited here last Tuesday for my son's birthday. The place looked the same as it did in it's previous iteration, Wongs, which I visited about 20 years ago. That is a positive, as it is very oriental and ornate with lots of reds and blacks subtly lighted. It was a quiet evening in Yangs and three of us opted for the early bird menu and one from the A la carte offering. Starters were standard fare, spring rolls, Schezwan chicken skewers etc. no surprises. I had spring rolls which were served with a sweet/sour sauce, on par with Iceland's offering, Mains came, my son had chicken Hong Kong style which was very good, my wife had a shredded Duck dish which was fine. My sons girlfriend and I opted for Chicken & Beef curries which were well below the standard. The meats in the curries were fine but the sauce could only be described as a grey "gloop" of flour and water, with the consistency of wallpaper paste, which had some spices and pieces of raw onion throw in as an afterthought. Drinks were very expensive @ 6 Euro for bottles of Heineken and 27 Euro for a bog standard Rioja. I may check in in 20...
