Hi La Cucina, I’m sorry that this isn’t a positive review. I’ve always enjoyed coming here, and the rolls and cakes used to be excellent. The cakes were once kept safely behind glass, which made sense in such a small space. Now they’re beside the till, and I found myself leaning over to get my coffee and trying not to bump the cakes. As I was leaving, another customer’s woolly jumper brushed very close to them, which felt too close for comfort. The rolls, once beautifully made, like the ciabatta with mozzarella, pesto, and aubergine, have been replaced by a simpler sandwich. The bread was soggy, the filling minimal, and overall it didn’t feel like something worth €10.

Had a light snack with a friend to catch up, ordered the Al Pomodoro bruschetta. There was a good portion of tomatoes with garlic and olive oil on the bread but needed more bread to balance the flavour of the tomatoes otherwise you would have some left over. The mocha is a really nice drink that goes well with it. It's a good place for a bite to eat but kind of cramped. Service was very good, the staff were friendly and efficient!

Delicious food made with top quality ingredients. This small restaurant is really a hidden gem and needs to be experienced. The intimate setting gives the place a homey and inviting atmosphere and the staff are excellent. Additionally, a great option to order a take away for at home. For lunch, dinner or just a sweet treat and a coffee, you won't be disappointed!

Fundamental issues in management and operations. Their employees are a cheap source of labour and that's it, enjoy the Christmas hamper everyone has to share, while management take their "fair share" of tips.

they give a "welcome to the family" spiel but not like any family I know.

and went 11 months without contacting me during the temporary lay-off, which to me was a sign to look elsewhere for employment and now being threatened with disciplinary action by a director at La Cucina for not replying to his email after 30 days when they went 300+ days without contacting me, despite the cafe being open 90 days out of those 300.

Food 2/5 Management 0/5 Minimum wage staff 4/5 (they put up with so much from management)

Asked the director to have an owner contact me to discuss these very issues but apparently not important enough.

Edit: I did find one of the owners to be very helpful when my bike was vandalised by a chef in the Castletroy premises but that appears to have been a one-off considering staff turnover was always quite high with staff members walking out in tears after "talks" with an...

I was at a conference at UL and found myself in a quandary to find a restaurant that was not on campus (most had closed for the night) that was nearby and didn't require me going into the city. Siri on my iPhone pointed me to La Cucina as the closest restaurant, and I figured out that I couldn't go too wrong with Italian food. I didn't see the prior reviews until later. The staff was friendly, the establishment was clean and quaint, and they let me tweak my order (I wanted an ingredient left out of my pasta dish). I also picked up a cookie and a juice for takeaway. I got back to the university to have my solo dish. It was delicious! It hit the spot and was seasoned well. The cookie was good too. I may have another night like this during the conference, and if I do, I'm going back! I really enjoyed my meal there. And the prices weren't too crazy either for a home-cooked style...

From the moment you walk into this little Italian gem, you’re greeted like family. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with the highest quality food and coffee. Every dish I’ve had from salads to pasta has been impressive, however their burrata and hot honey pizza is something else. I cannot say enough about the standard, all the sweet treats and desserts are amazing- again a special mention to the tiramisu!!

The service is just as impressive as the food. Every member of staff goes above and beyond, but I have to give a special mention to Eoin. He’s simply the best — friendly, attentive, and somehow always knows exactly what you need before you even ask. He makes every visit that bit more special.

If you’re after delicious Italian food, excellent coffee and wine, and a team that genuinely cares about their customers, this place is...
