Good food, but disappointing handling of the bill at Bella Napoli Bergamo
We had dinner here and the food itself was genuinely good. Unfortunately, the experience was overshadowed by how the bill was handled.
The wine was mediocre but still €7 per glass. The double espresso (€4) was simply bad — definitely not up to Italian standards.
We asked about children’s portions of spaghetti bolognese. They didn’t offer any, but the waitress helpfully suggested splitting one portion between our two kids. We agreed but when the bill came, we were charged for two full portions (€14.90 each) even though it was clearly one plate divided.
We objected, and the waitress said it would be fixed. But at the counter, nothing had been adjusted. Another waiter insisted children’s portions cost the same due to the amount of sauce — which was clearly not the case, as we saw what a full portion looked like at the table next to us.
Eventually, the extra charge was removed, but even then they tried once more to push it through during payment.
There was also a €12 service charge (place setting 4 persone) which in all fairness was printed on the menu, but it still felt excessive given the overall experience.
The waitress did genuinely try to give us a pleasant evening, but the interior felt a bit run-down and not particularly clean.
A real shame, the food was good, but the rest made it one of our least enjoyable dining experiences.
Even with good food, the overall handling makes it hard...
Read moreI know this opinion is just one of many, but maybe you just had to put yourself in my shoes for a moment. The food was excellent, i thought i found one of the best pizzerias in italy but the disappointment is huge and all for about 12 euros. The waitress with black hair and a tattoo had a negative attitude towards us, even though we were very polite and nice all the time (I've been working in gastronomy for 12 years, I've run many great restaurants) and I know what can upset a waiter, so I don't do it. I asked for a lemon with my water twice and they forgot about it, the waitress never asked if the food was tasty or if we wanted to add something, just served and taken away the plates without any interest while other guests could enjoy a nice evening. When the service is good, we always leave a tip, but when the waiter is poor, why doesn't he even have to ask for a tip? For me it is absurd, i asked the waiter about the added tip but i heard that everyone does it. NO, i've been to italy 32 times and it's not like that at all, i'm a tourist but that doesn't change anything. The restaurant could be 5 stars but there are some things that spoil it. I left sad, I wanted to come back before I left and try some pasta and seafood but no, just no. 20% coperto.....
Read moreFrom the moment we walked into the restaurant, things felt strange. We were given just one old-looking sheet of paper as a menu, and it didn’t look very professional. When I started taking a picture to translate it, the waitress suddenly came over with another menu — but again, only one for the two of us to share.
We ordered two Margherita pizzas, which were listed as €7 each. But when we got the bill, the total was higher than expected. It felt like a scam. It looked like we were charged for drinks we didn’t order.
We know that coperto (cover charge) is normal in Italy, and we accept that — but in this case, it was added only after the waiter came back to “correct” the bill. So in the end, we still didn’t pay the price shown in the menu.
The whole situation was handled in an embarrassing way — it just made us feel bad. I wouldn’t recommend this place to tourists. Locals might know it well and maybe like it, but as a visitor, it felt shady.
I hope the owner sees this review and explains why things work like this. The service felt suspicious, the menus were hard to read, and charges were added in a random way. It’s disappointing — even though the pizza itself was...
