An unusual pastry place for most of us who are used to big display cases with dozens of kinds of pastry exhibited and wetting our appetites. At Boccabò all you find in the sales room is a desk as you might expect in any old fashioned tax accountant’s studio in Southern Italy. But it is what is behind the screen to your left that counts. It is where the most delicious bononotti, cannoli and cakes are being produced. Mainly upon order but there are always also a few for sale for the passer-by. As I walked in to pick up my order to share with friends in Vienna, a fresh load of boconotti had just come out of the oven and the warm light ricotta filling with a faint hint of lemon melted on my tongue and begged for more. Further South you will be offered boconotti that are essentially differently shaped pasticciotti (with the customary cream or amarena cherry fillings). Anyone in Bitonto will instruct you as to the true origin and nature of THE boconotto and, you guessed right, the are from Bitonto and look and taste just like produced but the friendly and hardworking...
