Villa Baroni — Restaurant in Bodio Lomnago

We stayed at Villa Baroni for three nights in early May for our wedding, and overall it was a pleasant experience. The location by Lake Varese is sublime — with beautiful views and a well-kept, presentable hotel both inside and out.

We had both breakfast and dinner during our stay. The food was of very good quality with well-prepared dishes, though dinner prices felt slightly high considering the setting. Still, it was convenient and enjoyable, especially when with family or for a special event.

We were given three rooms for our families. As bride and groom, we stayed in the largest room (EUR 200/night), which was spacious, vintage in style, and had two large windows. We appreciated the in-room tea and coffee maker. The smaller rooms with direct lake views were charming and suitable for a weekend getaway.

Unfortunately, certain behaviours affected our stay. A lady (possibly the owner?) let her dog roam freely throughout the hotel and restaurant — at one point even jumping on a dining table. Her friends also brought dogs to dinner, which barked frequently. This was inappropriate and unhygienic for guests, especially since booking platforms (Booking.com, Trivago, BringFido) state that pets aren’t allowed. The inconsistency in policy was disappointing.

Rooms are on the first floor, accessible via a staircase next to reception. There’s a large fridge at the bottom for water bottles, but no door separates the floors. As a result, we could clearly hear guests leaving, bottles being handled, and bins being used between 11 p.m. and midnight. Most disruptive was the dog barking loudly for 15+ minutes around midnight, waking my toddler. Instead of moving the dog to a quiet room, the lady shouted at it — making things worse. I love dogs, but there are limits in shared spaces.

The Wi-Fi was another issue — weak and unreliable in the rooms, only stable on the ground floor. A more consistent connection would be expected at this level.

Our room, while not bad, could use an update. The red-brown carpet is dated and would be better replaced with wood flooring. There was visible mould between the wardrobe and window wall — clearly cleaned periodically, but it needs deeper treatment, which is understandable in lake settings.

Some furnishings felt mismatched or flimsy: a beige leather sofa clashed with the vintage decor, a round table with a heavy oriental lamp was unstable, the desk chair was wobbly, the headboard outdated, and the shower door didn’t close properly. The wall-mounted hairdryer was very noisy, and the small TV high on the wall looked out of scale. Several extension cords and loose sockets gave a cluttered and unsafe impression.

On a positive note, Alina at reception was incredibly kind and welcoming, and the cleaning lady was thoughtful and made sure our room was ready for the bridal party.

Abbiamo soggiornato a Villa Baroni per tre notti a inizio maggio in occasione del nostro matrimonio, e nel complesso è stata un'esperienza piacevole. La posizione sul Lago di Varese è semplicemente sublime: il panorama che si gode dalle camere è davvero suggestivo, e l'hotel, sia all’esterno che all’interno, è curato e presentabile.||Durante il soggiorno abbiamo provato sia la colazione che la cena. La qualità del cibo è stata molto buona in entrambi i casi, con proposte ben preparate e ingredienti di livello. I prezzi della cena ci sono sembrati però un po’ alti, soprattutto considerando il contesto generale della struttura. Tuttavia, resta un’opzione comoda e gradevole, soprattutto se si soggiorna con la famiglia o in occasione di eventi speciali.||Eravamo con le nostre famiglie e ci sono state assegnate tre camere. Come sposi, abbiamo scelto la camera più grande (EUR 200 a notte), arredata in stile vintage, molto spaziosa e dotata di due grandi finestre. La presenza di un bollitore con tè e caffè è stata molto apprezzata. Le camere con vista diretta sul lago erano un po’ più piccole ma comunque graziose, perfette per un lungo weekend di relax.||Tuttavia, alcuni comportamenti hanno compromesso l’esperienza. Una signora (forse la proprietaria?) lasciava libero il suo cane all’interno dell’hotel e del ristorante — il cane è addirittura saltato su un tavolo da pranzo! Una sera, amici della signora sono venuti a cena al ristorante con i rispettivi cani, che abbaiavano spesso. Questa situazione, oltre a essere inappropriata, era poco igienica per gli altri ospiti. Questo è ancora più sorprendente considerando che, secondo quanto riportato sui principali portali di prenotazione, gli animali non sono ammessi nella struttura. Questo doppio standard nella gestione lascia perplessi.||Le camere si trovano al primo piano, raggiungibile tramite la scala accanto alla reception. Alla base delle scale c’è un grande frigo per le bottiglie d’acqua, ma non c’è una porta a separare il piano terra dal primo piano, quindi la sera tardi (tra le 23:00 e mezzanotte) sentivamo chiaramente il rumore degli ospiti del ristorante che uscivano, delle bottiglie rimesse nel frigo e perfino il suono delle bottiglie vuote gettate nei bidoni. La cosa più spiacevole è stata quando il cane della signora ha abbaiato per oltre 15 minuti attorno a mezzanotte, proprio mentre ero con mia figlia piccola che cercava di dormire. Invece di portarlo in una stanza chiusa per non disturbare gli ospiti, la signora si è limitata a sgridarlo ad alta voce, peggiorando la situazione. Adoro i cani, ma ci vuole un limite, soprattutto in un ambiente condiviso.||Per quanto riguarda la camera, nel complesso non era male, ma avrebbe davvero bisogno di un aggiornamento. La moquette rosso-mattone è piuttosto datata e potrebbe essere sostituita con del parquet, per valorizzare ulteriormente lo stile della villa. Abbiamo notato presenza di muffa tra l’armadio e il muro verso la finestra: è evidente che venga pulita regolarmente, ma sarebbe opportuno intervenire più a fondo. Questo tipo di problema non è insolito in prossimità di un lago, ma resta comunque da risolvere.||Alcuni elementi dell’arredamento erano poco coerenti o poco funzionali: il divano in pelle beige stonava con lo stile vintage della stanza; il tavolino rotondo con una pesante lampada orientale non era in linea con il resto della camera e risultava instabile; la sedia della scrivania traballava, la testiera del letto era datata, così come la doccia, la cui porta non chiudeva bene. L’asciugacapelli era il classico modello a scatola a muro, molto rumoroso, e la TV a parete sembrava sproporzionata rispetto alla stanza. Inoltre, c’erano prolunghe elettriche e prese poco stabili con cavi visibili.||Un grande elogio va ad Alina, la receptionist più gentile e accogliente, e alla signora delle pulizie, davvero disponibile: è riuscita a sistemare la stanza in tempo per permettermi di preparami per il matrimonio.||In sintesi, il soggiorno è stato complessivamente positivo, grazie alla bella posizione, al personale gentile (soprattutto Alina), e all’atmosfera della villa. Tuttavia, la gestione degli animali, il rumore serale e le camere datate sono aspetti da migliorare per rendere l’esperienza all’altezza delle potenzialità...

This is a wonderful, beautiful place. We have just spent a week here and would stay an extra week but they are fully booked. I can see why.||The staff are friendly, genuinely nice people who clearly care very much about the establishment, its standards and reputation.||Breakfast is a delight, with a stupendous view over the lake. Dinner was exceptional.||The staff are like a family who want to make you feel welcome and part of the place. They can’t do enough for you. An example is me asking if they knew somewhere where I could buy a mouse to use with my laptop. Not only did they lend me the one from their own PC there and then (they had a spare) they ordered one from Amazon for me. All done with a lovely spirit of helpfulness.||We can’t recommend Villa Baroni enough.
