La Taverna Del Pittore Bolgheri — Restaurant in Castagneto Carducci

We had no reservation on a Sunday evening. The place was packed at 8:00 PM. We were meeting in Bolgheri with my childhood friend Jessica who had driven 1:30 hours from Lucca to meet with my wife and I. Every place we tried to get a table for 3 told us they were totally booked, until I found Silvia and I explained I had come all the way from Florida (USA) to Bolgheri to eat at a typical place in town and I could not leave Bolgheri without eating there. She asked me with a sweet “Italian accent in English”….from Florida? I said yes, all the way from Florida. She then proceeded to ask me if I could wait wait until 9:00 PM (45 minute wait) and I took it right away. So then we proceeded to sit at a bench outside the restaurant area. I came to her and I asked her if she could bring us wine to the bench. She came outside, saw it was a bit away but accepted. Not only she brought us 3 glasses of an amazing local wine but she also brought us some delicious hors d’oeuvre with “truffle” to munch on.

The setting was magical, the food and the service superb. An amazing evening that started with Silvia making an opening for us.

I got back to the states with beautiful memories from Bolgheri and “La Taverna del Pittore”. I fully recommend everyone to have the unforgettable evening like the one...

the restaurant is located in the center of the beautiful village of Bolgheri in Tuscany. The tables in the summer are set up Outside the restaurant, at first sight everything looks nice and functional but once seated you discover a wobbling table, uncomfortable chairs and just enough lighting to see what you are eating. The table service needs to be improved, even considering the holiday it is not possible to wait about an hour between starter and main course. Perhaps the position of the secluded table penalized us but the frequency of the waiters passage was absolutely insufficient and consequently, even to get a bottle of water we had to wait. The menu is basic but the offer of dishes is quite varied and complete. As for the quality of the food it is equal to that of a normal restaurant typical of the place but with a higher price level. In Bolgheri and surroundings there are restaurants where you could eat better for the same money.The wine list is quite complete and is obviously based on the exceptional local wines. I wish I could give more stars!!! What an warm and welcoming place to have lunch. We had a really nice time and felt really welcome. Our waiter explained in detail the menu in English for me, as my Italian is not up to scratch and the food was extremely tasty and well presented. We were here by chance and as fate would have it had a really enjoyable meal and a lunch we'll never forget. Afterwards I checked some or the reviews and can't understand the latest ones from mostly disgruntled Germans. Don't be discouraged by the silly one star reviews. It is not cheap, but the food was excellent, so it's a focus on quality and not quantity, if you want a 3€ Döner, then go elsewhere Freunde. If you enjoy fine dining and a beautiful setting, then this is the place for you.
