Baccaleria e non solo Street food — Restaurant in Foiano della Chiana

DO NOT MISS HER SPECTACULAR SEAFOOD.

We stumbled upon this restaurant completely by accident after spending a few hours at Valdichiana village outlet mall.

It is a very small casual restaurant with only two employees, the server and front end person and the fantastic cook in the back.

I am the first person to admit to having a little less patience than I should and when we arrived four other groups had come in before us. I did not really understand why the front end person was ignoring us and slowly dealing with the other groups that preceded us. It seemed that he could have taken our order on multiple occasions but took his time and cleaned other tables and did other things while we waited for any semblance of service.

However I was completely unaware that there were just two of them, and had he taken our order sooner it would have just sat in the back while the fantastic female chef cooked other people's meals one at a time.

I will say that getting drinks to us sooner would have created a better impression and I think it could have been accommodated.

There were no menus only a poster on the wall showing the dozen or so items at very modest prices. My wife and I both had the baked fish and we ordered one side of fried vegetables.

One of the interesting things on the menu that we unfortunately skipped was an octopus sandwich. A young man sitting adjacent to us ordered it and later told us it was tender and spectacular. We will not miss it on our next visit which will be soon.

The final ironic twist for my review is that my wife and I were eating at a Michelin restaurant two days later and started up a conversation with the elegant woman beside us. The conversation turned to the best places to eat in the area and we were in Sarteano about a half an hour away.

I asked her if she ever went to Valdichiana Village and she dismissed me which I assume meant that she did not typically buy her clothes at an outlet mall. But just moments later she said "there is the best seafood restaurant near there", describing this place in...

Baccaleria é stata una piacevole scoperta..il locale in pratica é una veranda in legno..ma i piatti,tutti a base di pesce e tutti cotti molto bene,ti fanno credere di essere in un chiosco in riva al mare,non alla periferia di un centro commerciale..il servizio é stato abbastanza veloce,ma non immediato..e anche questo é buon segno,xché vuol dire che i cibi vengono preparati al momento e ci sono poche cose surgelate..da provare assolutamente il baccalà fritto(magari con un'insalata,piuttosto che con le patate)..mai mangiato un baccalà piú buono..eppoi perfettamente pulito(senza spine e pelle)..x averne ancora(3 pezzi non mi sono bastati)l'ho preso anche nella frittura con le alici,a cui ho fatto aggiungere anche i calamari,tanto x non farmi mancare nulla..pure dei calamari avrei fatto il bis,ma le alici avevano un'impanatura un pò pesante,di uovo e pangrattato,che me lo ha impedito..se le alici fossero state solo infarinate,anche loro sarebbero state perfette..x concludere questo pranzo a base di pesce(peccato che non sono aperti la sera)..ho preso un panino con tentacoli di polpo,burrata,pistacchi tritati e,al posto della salsa guacamole,la salsa verde..che é una delle mie salse preferite e ne avrei gradito in maggiore quantità..comunque,il polpo era tenerissimo,il migliore che ho mangiato..la cuoca,Sofia,é giovane,ma ha grinta e carattere da vendere..e sono sicura che farà parlare di sé in cucina,se queste sono...

Se il vostro obiettivo è quello di mangiare qualcosa di veloce ma senza rinunciare al gusto, la Baccaleria di Franco e Sofia (la rima è venuta così) è il posto che fa per voi! Noi ci siamo stati in un momento non affollato ed abbiamo scelto due varianti del panino con il polpo, una con burrata, salsa verde e pomodori secchi e l'altra con burrata, granella di pistacchio e salsa guacamole. Scelta decisamente azzeccata. I panini sono arrivati in pochissimo tempo, molto ben farciti con un polpo tenerissimo e in formato decisamente XL. La simpatia di Franco e di sua figlia Sofia ben si abbina al posto, informale ma accogliente e pulito.
