Cantina Ancidda — Restaurant in Potenza

We had high hopes for Potenza. After all, it was a convenient halfway point on our journey to Matera. Cantina Ancidda had great reviews.. tucked away in the heart of town, promising an authentic local experience. Authentic, it turns out, might mean something a little different here.

After navigating the charming maze of streets and elusive parking, we finally made our way to the restaurant on a Sunday, ready to taste what all the glowing reviews were about. There was only one table taken in the whole restaurant during lunch time. But unfortunately, we were greeted not with a menu or a table, but with a “Sorry, no tourists” from a man who worked there. No explanation. Just.. no tourists. Maybe he doesn't speak enough English and we only speak limited Italian, so perhaps the man didn't feel up to making the effort to explain things to people who don't speak his language.

Now, whether this was an isolated case of poor hospitality or a broader reflection of the town’s relationship with visitors is unclear. But let’s just say we didn’t feel particularly welcome.

If Cantina Ancidda’s policy is to serve only locals, that’s certainly one way to preserve tradition. It’s also a creative way to discourage tourism, which, again, might be the point. So if you’re planning a visit to Potenza, maybe skip the restaurant research or the town entirely. Unless of course, you enjoy the thrill of not knowing whether you’ll be served or simply dismissed.

But hey, at least we’ll always remember Potenza. Just not...

All'arrivo eravamo in 9 , (prenotati 7, si sono aggiunte due persone) già iniziano i malumori... il proprietario ci sottolinea che dovevamo essere in 7( chiunque altro locale sarebbe stato felice di 2 persone in più, il proprietario invece sembrava di no), cmq ordiniamo ore 14 :10, antipasto della casa... niente di esagerato, arrivano i primi ... ordiniamo i secondi, prende la comanda e mentre sta per portare le tagliate ( 2 con cipolla ed una con rucola e scaglie di grana) ci dice che erano tutte e tre con cipolla, alche' riferiamo che una doveva essere senza e lui ci dice" ormai è fatta, tolgo la cipolla e la porto"... va bene gli rispondiamo ed andiamo avanti... ore 15 :40 chiediamo per il dolce e lui senza farci finire ci dice noi tra 10 minuti dobbiamo chiudere , e noi educatamente gli rispondiamo "se è un problema andiamo da un altra parte"... lui però sempre sbuffando ce li porta( dolci a nostro parere mediocri) cmq nel frattempo ci porta il caffè e mancava anche un dolcificante... oltre a non avere nemmeno un po' di frutta... Forse quel giorno il proprietario era in una giornata no... cmq usciamo delusi ed amareggiati... Aggiornamento dopo risposta del proprietario. Ci devi scusare per aver disturbato i tuoi" clienti" ma ti ripeto ti abbiamo pagato con gli stessi soldi ... forse l'unica accenno di sorrisino è stato quando hai incassato i soldi... Pertanto volevo solo dirle che noi nove insieme a tutti i nostri amici , familiari e colleghi (e le assicuro che ne abbiamo veramente tanti)non disturberemo più lei ed il suo staff. Cmq come dice lei... ti commenti da solo... Potevi fare anche buon viso, tanto nel locale vi erano 5 persone e noi eravamo in nove, c'erano altri posti liberi , ed in più in mezzo a noi c'era una donna incinta al settimo mese, e stavamo festeggiando anche lei ... GRAZIE ANCORA. Buon lavoro ... un pochino di professionalità in più non...

Quaint little restaurant, very local with a very friendly host. He speaks minimal english but we were able to understand him well. He suggested 2 non alcoholic drink to us and we both like the drinks! ☺️

Scialatielli Pasta - cooked with breadcrumbs and chillies Fusilli Pasta - cooked with tomato sauce, minced beef, meatball and chicken chunks.
