We had a truly first class experience at Felice Sgarra new restaurant in Trani a week ago. This dinner was without doubt one of the best meals we have had in Puglia ever. From start to finish, everything was as close to perfect as it could have been. We were greeted warmly and brought to our table in the lovely courtyard overlooking the magical port of Trani. Although we ate outside, the dining room looks modern and cosy too. But the main attraction is the food, absolutely fabulous - modern and delicate but full of flavours and beautifully presented, from start to finish. Being located by the seaside, fish, shellfish and crustaceans play a big role on the menu. The starter of raw seafood insalata was super fresh and balanced with a just a kick coming from a yuzu salsa. The risotto with raw local gambero was creamy and perfectly cooked. But surprisingly, the meaty dishes were remarkable too. The tartare of thinly sliced Podolica cow tonnato was superb, worthy of the top restaurants from Piedmont. As for the best dish, it was the incredible raviolini del plin with caprino con olive dolci... flavourful, with great texture and a well balanced acidity coming from the sauce. The desserts were succulent too, with the cassata and double cannolo standing out. The wine list is excellent and without doubt one of the best in the region, with a very reasonable mark-up. Read moreI feel the urge to recommend this extraordinary restaurant. I dined there for the first time in 2021 and returned 5 times until today. Every time that my partner and I travel to Italy we please ourselves visiting Casa Sgarra.
The three brothers treated us wonderfully with the warmth of an old fashioned host of a typical trattoria and the elegance and attention to detail of a renowned European grand restaurant. I had the pleasure to eat five different vegan tasting menus there. Chef Felice Sgarra managed to learn what pleases me and prepare tailor-made menus accordingly to my taste while my partner enthusiastically enjoyed the classic non-vegan menu with meat and dairy products. Needless to comment again on the outstanding service and welcome from the sommelier, Riccardo Sgarra, I would like to maintain the focus on the food: an incredible mix of traditional, almost archaic dishes that woke up memories of my childhood, exalted by far rooted ingredients e.g. Yuzu juice, prepared in an elegant, simple and modern key. Genuine, delicate-strong flavours rich in contrasts with excellent presentations.
The whole experience is enriched and enhanced by different wine glasses sapiently proposed to pair each different dish. The sommelier accompanied us from the starter until the dessert, from sparkling wine to delicious fruit spirits passing by elegant red wines.

The puddings themselves make you wish this meal would never end, The a Ricot and cream soufflé is light as a feather yet wonderful And the tartufo is an exciting blend of mereingue rich dark chocolate, cream, ice cream. Nuts and chocolate chips. Heaven! But you haven’t finished yet. You still have the ice cold almonds and five types of petit fours to come.
