Japanese Restaurant YASUNA — Restaurant in Arita

There’s a friendly lady who can speak English fluently but she helps only at the entrance.

No English menus. No details explained even on the Japanese menus. No vegetarian option.

Not disability/wheelchair friendly. There’s many steps at the outside. No elevator to access to the second floor. There’s not enough room for wheelchair access. No disability friendly bathroom.

No explanation for the foods while serving. I ordered a hot coffee but served them right after food served. (It’s December) Of course coffee got cold when I reached to it.

Food presentation was good. There’s many fishes, fish eggs, shellfish, slimy seaweed and soup and Godofu (like pudding made with soy milk and starch). Some of them were taste good but many of them were just okay or smelled too strong even for Japanese. The raw fish were kind of smelling so they weren’t fresh enough in my opinion. Rices looked old. The rice looked dull. Not shiny fresh harvested rice at all. (Again it’s December. Good season for fresh harvest rice.)

The place is beautiful, however the kaiseki dinner was quite disappointing. The godofu (a local tofu speciality) was definitely the only highlight. The quality of the ingredients used and the elaboration process were subpar. The hostess in quite good English made it clear that I could only choose between the highest and medium range menus, which are supposed to be of higher quality. Food, service and ambience were perfect in this quiet countryside town. Ordered the cheapest kaiseki set for ¥3,900 per pax and we were then treated to comfort in a private room. The room was air conditioned in this early summer weather.
