Mochitoko is great value with gorgeous views of Aso's central mountains and smoking volcano. It offers a very tasty vegetable lunch set at 600 Yen. (I only gave it 4 stars because I wish it had been truly vegetarian - they use fish stock in some dishes.) You can add a main of either fried chicken, hamburger or wild boar for an extra 300 Yen. I skipped that and added a drink and mochi dessert for 400 Yen. The fried mochi was crispy, and light and went so well with its ice-cream topping! We had the regular set lunch with no added protein, moffles (mochi waffles) with sweet bean powder (kinako), and red bean soup (sweet and salty) with a generous helping mochi (lovely wintery dessert).
