シェ·タニ瀬の本高原店 — Restaurant in Kokonoe

We saw this place advertised on TV and it looked really nice so we drove 4 hours just to visit it.

I’ll start off by saying that the cafe and view are really beautiful. However, we did not drive 4 hours one way just for the view.

I gave this cafe 3 stars ( actually I’d like to give 2.5) for the menu. The menu is very limited and not flexible. They have 2 sets available both costing around the same amount. You must choose TWO slices of cake - you get a coffee with it. You can not order just one slice of cake and a coffee. Neither of us can eat two slices of cake at one time. The coffee is served from a “drink bar” but refills are 150 yen. At least this is what we were told.

It was really disappointing. We drove really far and didn’t want to just leave…so we reluctantly ordered one set of 2 pieces of cake and a coffee… and got a glass of water because… you couldn’t just order one coffee. The cake was “ok” a bit too sweet for our tastes though.

It was a huge letdown after driving so far. Obviously we will not...

Absolutely beautiful views! I was astounded by them and contrary to other reviews here - I think it definitely is worth the visit for views alone.

Free parking available and plenty of seating inside and some outside too.

Cake selection was nice and varied, with all the cakes looking beautiful. I got the strawberry shortcake, apple pie and (because the apple pie was a little small) I was able to have a lemon macaron too. Every single one was lovely.

My only criticism was that the apple pie tasted a little artificial. It would be lovely to see some desserts catering to vegans too.

Like cake and other related sweets? This is your place. First, the menu. You can choose a drink and one or two kinds of cake and regular-sized portions, OR go with what is recommended and get the all-you-can-eat and drink course. Then you can walk up and say this, this and this, grab your own drink. Rinse, repeat and much as you want in two hours. The dessert portions will be much smaller, so you can try many kinds.
