Costco has been my favorite store for close to 20 years. Not only because of the good quality merchandises, and the great prices, but also the sense of trust and knowing that Costco will protect my consumer’s right. So when I move from United States to Japan, I kept my Costco membership, hope to continue shopping with Costco. However, things had changed a bit today after shopping in Costco Maebashi Japan. When I stepped into the Costco Maebashi store today, the price tag on a pile of “water pressure washer” attracted my attention. It is clearly stated “JPY 9800”, and there is only one type of pressure washer there. So that is obviously a great price for the washer. I took one along with some other products and proceed to checked out. Only after checking out, I kind of feel odd about the total amount I had paid. The receipt shows the washer was charged as JPY 21800. After talking to a female staff named Yoko, she double checked the location of washers, as well as the price tag, and agreed that display price was JPY 9800. I thought I will get a refund for the excess amount at customer service. But NO! The customer service went to check the price tag also agree the tag shows 9800yen. However after talking to his manager, he just simply took down the sign and claimed that was a mistake on Costco, and he cannot sell me the washer at JPY9800, but 21800yen. To my understanding, when I walked into a store, the advertised price was the agreement for me to pay the amount in exchange goods. It was a mutual agreement between the store and customer. Base on the trust that Costco will not do false advertisement, I would think I paid 9800Yen for the washer without checking the receipt. But today’s event at Maebashi, totally betrayed my trust to Costco. How many other customers had bought the washers thinking it was 9800 yen only paid a much higher price? If I had not re-enter the store to check the price, is that means I will unknowingly paid 21800yen but attracted to buy with lower price? If the staff simply took down the wrong price tag and demand me pay the higher price, should it considered as FALSE advertising? What happen to the consumer protection promised by Costco? Sadly, I had to return the washer. I had been shopping in Costco for long time, and will probably continue to do so. I enjoy been the member of Costco, but from today, that enjoyment will always come with a grain of salt.
UPDATE: the site manager called me today and offer to sell me the washer for 9800, and promise to always honor the sign in the store. So I up the...
Read moreCostco is excellent. The membership cost is a great deal for imported items at surprisingly reasonable prices. The food court has great food, such as pizza (whole or by the slice) and hot dogs which they famously sell at no profit as a membership benefit. Regrettably, the garden burger was just changed to be a garden pita with different sauce, but maybe that's delicious too? I didn't order it this time. I like to pick up ready-made meals at the back of the store too, such as pastas, brined rotisserie chicken, or ham and cheese roulades. These are great for family dinner or for one person who doesn't want to cook for a few meals. Sometimes when I get busy, this is very beneficial. Their bakery is very good, too. You can buy a cake right away, or order a custom cake 2 days in advance, with a combination of cake, filling, and icing flavors you like and a personalized message. In addition to being a great place for customers, employees are paid well, so everyone benefits. I only wish the Maebashi store was open longer or there was a store closer to home (in Nagano). It's worth the time and gas money though. Thanks for everything, Costco! Especially, thank you for selling these...
Read moreThe meat for BBQ, shabu shabu, sukiyaki, gyoudong and salmon at Costco tastes really good, the price is also not so expensive. wow delicious pizza. Tiramisu tastes really bad, not tiramisu. Tiramisu that tastes good is Italian tiramisu, and costco first made and sold it last year during Christmas and New Year's Day, the price is pretty good, this tiramisu is really delicious. Tiramisu in a glass of 6 pieces is also very delicious. The price of goods a costco goes up, regular memberships don't get points. Buying pizza, hot dogs, burgers, soft cream in the corner of the room also doesn't get points. When the goods are checked, not everything is checked. Costco should provide special prices or gifts for members who remain loyal to non-stop shopping for more...
