韓国居酒屋マンナン — Restaurant in Miyakojima

We visited this restaurant as a couple. We were immediately shown to our table, and a small appetizer (seaweed) was served without any explanation — we hadn’t ordered it, it was just placed in front of us as we sat down. Then we were given a paper menu in English and placed our order.

The dishes were brought out gradually, and we had to remind the staff about one item they forgot to deliver. At some point, one of the staff members invited us to take photos in kimono and with a traditional musical instrument. I asked if it was free, but received no clear answer. After the photo, we were handed traditional beads and took part in a brief “musical performance.”

The unpleasant surprise came with the bill: • 600 yen — for the appetizer we didn’t order, • 1200 yen — for the musical performance, which we assumed was just part of the restaurant’s ambiance.

When we asked about the 600 yen charge, the staff explained it was for the appetizer and a “table charge” combined. We didn’t bother asking about the second fee — by that point, it was clear. There was no mention of either of these charges in the English menu, nor were we informed about them verbally.

The food itself was decent, and the charges weren’t very high, but this kind of unannounced add-on pricing leaves a bad impression and feels dishonest. What’s more disappointing is that this practice seems to target foreign guests, who, not speaking Japanese, tend to trust the staff and don’t expect hidden costs. In all our travels across Japan, we’ve never experienced this kind of treatment before.

It’s also worth noting that the restaurant’s interior and style have changed compared to the photos on Google Maps. The Korean menu has been significantly reduced, and many of the dishes mentioned in past reviews were no longer available.
