Despite being considered a 2 star Michelin restaurant, this was the worst Michelin star experience in 20 years of eating in Michelin star restaurants. Perhaps the Kyushu guide needs updating as this restaurant definitely needs a makeover.
This restaurant has a lot of good reviews and perhaps the other positive reviews were written by friends, but we paid for our meal and booked here based on this restaurant's high status in the reviews.
The evening began with the chef yelling. I happened to ask if they had wifi because I wanted to check if we had booked the right restaurant. Everything was faded, run down and not at all in keeping with Michelin two-star standards. This made the owner shout, while the wife actually began laughing about the need for Wifi to other guests. I felt I was like in some Japanese TV drama, which is ironic as this is the restaurant’s claim to fame.
However, there are many self absorbed and temperamental chefs in this world so my policy is that as long as the food is delicious, the chef can shout at guests all he wants.
Unfortunately, at best, the food here is on par with a normal good itamae restaurant in Kyushu. The biggest draw is the fresh ingredients used and the volume served. There is so much of everything that you can’t finish each plate — one big plate of the same sashimi followed by one big plate of tempura or meat soon gets boring. I would prefer less volume but a more refined taste.
But the reality is the food doesn't have much taste (normal, really, by the standards of good restaurants) and the entire experience is unacceptable for the price charged.
There was screaming throughout the evening (my daughter asked "why is he angry all night?") and a large amount of food served was of uneven quality or tasteless. The best was the meat and rice, but again, nothing spectacular.
I just couldn't finish my meal. And the price of 15,000 yen per person for this unfortunate night is something I would like to avoid if possible. Whoever gave this two stars obviously hasn’t eaten in too many other truly great...
