I came for dinner, one person at a very small table and today for the first time I was told by the waiter :” you only have 30 minutes to eat up your dinner from the time it arrives on your table”. Wow, that really made me feel uncomfortable, surely it doesn’t take longer or much longer than 30 minutes to eat it,but just the fact that I was told that, it made me feel very stressed and rushed :( I also noticed that customers at a table next to me were not told that. What should I think? Do they discriminate against non Japanese customers? Uhm I hope not. I suggest telling people about the 30 minutes rule only if they take very long to eat or just stay too long after finishing their meal. That I find it reasonable, but telling customers before they even get their food is outrageous for a restaurant that charges now ¥1000 and above for a set meal. I was thinking to order a dessert, but I didn’t know if the rule applies to that too, do you get an extra 30 minutes for the dessert or maybe only 15? In the end I gave up on the dessert and went to McDonald instead where I know it is a fast food restaurant. Here it’s only a fast restaurant. Are they timing customers? Do the waiters need to wear a smartwatch or use their mobile phone stopwatches maybe? I came to this Ootoya because the other two I used to visit regularly have shrunk the size of their meals. So now the portions are getting smaller, the time you can stay is getting shorter, but the prices are getting higher :( zannen I think I’ll start going less so the profit will shrink too. What do you think?
Update on 31 Jul 2023: today I went to the Makabi branch again to redeem my points and to my surprise the size of the meal was outrageously small. I posted two photos of it. Please have a look at the vegetables there is nothing to eat, as well as the fish, but the most ludicrous thing is the amount of soup I got. There was nothing in the bowl. I asked to speak to the manager who confirmed sizes have shrunk but did not offer a solution . Well, today was my last visit for at least two or three years. I’m not coming back to this Ootoya or any other Ootoya in Japan. When I go out to eat,I want to eat, not pay over ¥1000 for nothing. Not at this kind of restaurants. Shame they spoilt what was a very good experience. Just think: the prices have gone up and the sizes have shrunk about 40%, so we are now paying around 60-70% more than we use to pay a year ago. Enough. Bye bye Ootoya. In this price range there are many other chains that offer a...
Read moreThe Ootoya chain: The food here is always of good quality. The meat is a choice of fish or chicken dishes. One of the fish dishes is most excellent. Prices are around 700 and up to about 1000 yen per meal. You may ask for a larger serving of rice when ordering the meal (the price does not change), and also for a choice of different types of rice (the price may change. Please verify). The store has a most excellent service of soft drinks and coffee. Each paid for separately. You can drink as many cups of coffee/soft-drink and choose which kind you want from the machines. At times the store is very crowded. The menus come with nice pictures making it easy for foreigners...
