小将 — Restaurant in Nakafurano

The restaurant’s exterior is a bit old and unnoticeable and at first we thought that it was not operating anymore but because we wanted to try their food, we went back to see and check if they are open and fortunately they were. They only have japanese meals but they have various set of meal from beef, pork, chicken, fish and veggies too. It was lunch time and we ordered the special set meal (fried tonkatsu with fried shrimp) and the yakiniku set meal (grilled pork). The amount of serving was more than what we thought. It was plenty and it comes with generous amount of rice, miso soup and salad on the side. We were so full that I wanted to go back and try again the other set meal. The karaage was mouth watering from another table’s order. They only have japanese menu but if they notice you’re a foreigner, they will give you a photo album of their set menus. They don’t speak english but they are very welcoming and polite and would try to understand you as much as they can. Small mom and pop shop serving really wholesome and homey Japanese food, just like how your (Japanese) grandmother would cook it.

This is the local hub of Nakafurano - from the outside, it may look like a house and can be quite intimidating to enter, but once you step inside, it is almost like you've travelled back in time, and you will be greeted by a traditional Japanese izakaya interior that is reminiscent of the Showa period. As mentioned, this is THE izakaya that is visited by the locals of Nakafurano, where almost everybody knows everybody. You can expect to meet prominent members of the community here.

The food is very delicious and you can enjoy a large amount of food for a very reasonable price. Here, you can enjoy traditional Japanese "teishoku" (set meal) dishes like Katsu-Jyuu. (Katsudon in a sort of bento box)
