PIZZERIA ICARO — Restaurant in Nara

The owner told us he spent years living in Italy, learning about the Italian kitchen but also about celiac disease (which is a lot more common in Italy and Europe than it is in Japan). He took this knowledge with him when he started Icaro in Nara. We couldn't be happier. The food was delicious and items that weren't gluten free already were offered gluten free too (pasta, pizza).

This was an awesome experience, which I can recommend to anyone visiting Nara, including those who do not need to eat gluten free. The only 'negative' I can think of is that it's pretty far away from the major tourist attractions in Nara, so we needed to take a taxi...

I ordered from the online shop on the BASE app. I have limited Japanese skills. I was nervous about having gluten free pizza shipped all the way from Nara to Tokyo and spoke to the restaurant via Facebook chat... but I shouldn't have been worried. I received ten of the most amazing, perfectly frozen and packaged, quickly delivered and delicious pizzas and I would 100% recommend ordering from the online shop every chance you get! The Pizzeria Icaro staff are an amazingly professional, friendly and talented team! I am so happy! 😍🤤🍕 I hope to go to Nara and try the pizza fresh from the oven in the future and I will be sure to take along...

Pizza Icaro was one of the best choices we made during our trip to Japan. I have NCGS (non-Celiac gluten sensitivity) that affects my fibromyalgia symptoms so a celiac-safe diet is a must for me. Staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. My food came out on specific dishes for gluten free food. The owner and team really know what they're doing. The texture of the dough was the closest I've had to traditional wheat crusts in such a long time, perfectly chewy and soft. Also the first calzone I've had since having to change my diet. 100% recommend. It's already on the list to visit again when we return to Japan...
