山正本店 — Restaurant in Numazu

I’m not sure what the fuss is about, but I found this place exceedingly ordinary? Hearing about the queues, I arrived 30mins before opening on a weekday, but the signup sheet only appeared 15mins before opening. But surprisingly, just minutes before opening, a massive crowd had formed.

Heading in, I ordered the lunch deluxe nigiri set (might as well get the best if it’s good), with an upgrade to a mini-scallop soup. Unfortunately though, the rice was way too mushy, and did not have a strong presence. In many ways, it reminded me of a mid-range chain (e.g. Tomi Sushi or Ganko Sushi in Singapore), rather than a solid sushiya in Japan. The tuna maki were without much flavour, and for a moment I had flashbacks to the tuna used in poke bowls, which was slightly unfortunate.

Overall, I feel like this shop doesn’t have the skill nor ingredient quality to justify their more premium offerings. If one were to visit, their cheaper options like the Yamasho don would probably give a more reasonable sense of value. I wouldn’t make a special trip to eat here, coming from Tokyo — it was merely okay. For the exact same price, I had far better neta and shari at Sushi Ko Miue in Shizuoka city...
