Sakai Coffee Obihiro — Restaurant in Obihiro

Decided to try this place out for a change (from our usual cafe) on a Sunday morning. The building is quite nice, and the decor - chocolate and white - rather lovely. The bathroom was clean, well-appointed, and pleasantly spacious (which is a rare treat for someone my size). The music being broadcast was jazz, which I loathe, so that was a pity. The menu had several annoying time restrictions: everything we wanted to try was not available until later, close to lunch-time. The so-called breakfast menu was uninspiring: variations on toast with a boiled egg, and a macaroni gratin dish that was mediocre at best. The coffee beverage options were surprisingly limited, and typical of Japanese coffee shops of 20 years ago: no espresso options at all. I tried the Vienna coffee. It came without a teaspoon, and the coffee itself was nothing special. It could have been Nescafe Instant for all I know. There was zero evidence of the much-lauded ‘3rd wave’ of coffee here. On the upside, the food prices were very reasonable. The cafe is not very gaijin-friendly: no English menu. And this may be unfair to mention in a review, since it’s a cultural problem and not specific to this establishment... but even though I spoke to the staff in Japanese, they turned to my partner when responding and spoke to her because she looks like she could be Japanese (she isn’t). In this day and age, this sort of outdated, parochial behaviour is unacceptable in a service establishment, and the owner needs to properly train his staff to shift their standards into the 21st century...otherwise, I predict this coffee shop will disappear without a trace like so many...

Smart cafe in an old, high ceilinged building. The cafe is spread across two floors and offers a range of seating. There is a breakfast menu until 11am. The menu is in Japanese but comes with pictures. The service is friendly and swift....
