If you're in Onomichi and looking for a great meal with fine sake, put down your phone and just go here.
We had two servings of sake, one chef's choice each of sashimi, a serving of karaage, one sawara tataki, and four pieces of uni and ootoro nigiri. Very filling and absolutely delicious. The nigiri especially had well seasoned sushi rice and a sharp hand ground wasabi.
Our hosts were very hospitable. It was like eating at their home. We enjoyed the little chit chat with them greatly. They even showed us the remains of some of the fish when we did not recognize their names (ie. Okoze, or reef stonefish, which was also our favorite fish of the night.)
I happen to speak a bit of Japanese, but from our interactions I am sure tourists will be able to get by with simple English and google translate.
In total the bill came to around 18,000 yen for two persons including drinks. Fantastic value for a fantastic meal and great hospitality.
One note: I think the custom in this town is when you order one dish (say, karaage), the host assumes everyone is getting one order of karaage. If you're eating family style, do let the restaurant know so to avoid miscommunication and...

Amazing sake recommendation and delicious food.
The assorted sushi plate was nice, but the highlights were the fried tofu, fried chicken and shrimp.
We didn't want to leave and I don't think the owner wanted us to either - giving us a free taster of another fine sake, after our first couple of rounds.
