I recently visited Marutomo Seafood Market after seeing the beautiful pictures on Google, expecting a wonderful experience. I believe that good food is a universal language, even if I don’t speak the local one. The restaurant is small but charming, and there is parking available, though not a lot, so be sure to arrive early.
Upon entering, there’s a ticket counter where you get a number to wait for your turn. When my turn came, I thought I would receive good service, so I prepared to use Google Translate and images to communicate my order. Unfortunately, the staff didn't take the time to understand me. After less than a minute of trying to explain my order, the conversation was abruptly ended, and the staff member moved on to serve other customers. It took about 15 minutes for someone to speak to me again.
I tried to order two types of sashimi, some oysters, and a miso soup. After showing pictures of what I wanted, the staff still had trouble understanding me. During the third attempt, I used the conversation mode on Google Translate, and finally, I was able to place my order. I saw the staff say, “I'll bring him the items now.”
The sashimi I received was absolutely delicious, but I wasn’t sure if the miso soup and oysters were still coming. After asking about them, I was told that the oysters were sold out, and the miso soup arrived only after I had nearly finished my sashimi.
Despite the quality of the sashimi, the overall experience left me disappointed. I spent about an hour at the restaurant, and the service made the visit less enjoyable. I highly recommend that restaurants with excellent food, like this one, make an effort to have at least some English-speaking staff or take the time to help customers like me. It's a shame that such great food was overshadowed by...
Read moreTHE BEST SASHIMI I'VE EVER HAD !!!!! Hands down. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Shikoku. I stopped by on my way from Iya Valley to Matsuyama and am so glad I made the quick detour to eat here!! Such a hidden gem, full of old locals who know what good food is!!! I had the sashimi set. The fish was delectable, some melting in my mouth and others with the perfect soft chew. The scallop was naturally a little sweet and so soft you barely need to chew. The squid was the creamiest and most satisfying mouth feel I've ever had! I had to eat with rice because it was so creamy. I've truly never had any squid like it!!! Also they have a free tea machine with several varieties to help yourself. Awesome atmosphere, nestled inside the seafood market. But the restaurant as well as the food did not smell fishy! Everything was so fresh and clean. You must visit!!!!! (Also note: the most popular dish seemed to be the deep fried king prawns set. The locals seemed to...
Read moreNo English menu, and Google Translate can't detect the font on the menu. But some Japanese words are easy to understand e.g. 海鲜丼. Ordered kaisen don and special kaisen don. Difference only lies in addition of uni, clam, amaebi and something that looks like snail. Price difference 1300yen vs 2100yen. Recommend to order the normal kaisen don instead. Fish slices were super super thick cut. Anago is good. Also ordered ala carte ultra huge prawn fry. This is super solid!!! Highly recommend the prawn fry. Parking is available. Waited about 40 minutes on a Saturday at about 12pm. Food was...
