I live overseas, but every time I return to Japan, I look forward to visiting this restaurant with my family. From the warm welcome by the staff, you’re immediately put at ease. The restaurant is housed in a historic building, beautifully maintained to preserve its charm while offering a clean and comfortable atmosphere.
Each dish is carefully prepared by a chef who truly understands how to bring out the best in every ingredient. The classic steak and abalone dishes are consistently delicious, and the seasonal offerings allow you to savor the freshest flavors of the moment. The drink selection is impressive—not only alcoholic options, but also unique soft drinks. Local specialties, such as ingredients and craft gin from Hachioji, make the experience even more special.
Sitting at the teppan counter, you can enjoy watching the chef prepare the dishes right in front of you. We’re always taken care of by Chef Inoue (except during his time in Taiwan), whose culinary skills are top-notch and whose conversation makes the dining experience even more enjoyable. Whether he’s sharing insights about ingredients or cooking methods, or simply chatting about everyday life, the experience goes far beyond just enjoying a great meal—it’s about creating meaningful memories.
The entire staff deserves praise. It’s clear that many people are involved behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly. Some team members are from overseas, which, as a Japanese person working abroad myself, gives me a sense of connection and appreciation. This is not just a high-end restaurant—it’s a truly special place, deeply rooted in the local community of Hachioji. I wholeheartedly...
Read moreFantastic place for a special date night! Service is impeccable, from the moment attendants open your car door and greet you in the parking lot (with umbrellas if necessary), to when the wait and cooking staff see you off with a bow as you drive off. The food is delicious! You have a choice of a few fixed menus , each with a series of smaller dishes with a main course of teppanyaki steak. It is Japanese, so there are some items that may not be as popular with Westerners (like sea urchin in an appetizer), but I thought everything was delectable. Our abalone was cooked perfectly with a lemon pepper butter sauce. The steak was well-marbled and incredibly tender. The garlic rice was delicious. While our main course was served in a private room, our dessert was served in a separate sitting area. While dessert was delicious, the dessert sitting area was the only let down of the evening…but only in comparison to our experience at the Yokohama Ukai-tei location, where, instead of sitting in a tiny alcove facing a window that reflected the glare of the large room behind us, we sat in a larger, but still cozy separate sitting room. We both chose the cheapest course, and ordered two glasses of wine, one scotch on the rocks, and a Coke, and the total came out to about 48,000 jpy, or about 330 usd at today’s exchange rate. Definitely worth going to on...
Read moreIt's one of the best restaurants in the west part of Tokyo, and it offers excellent Euro fusion cuisine in teppan-yaki style, which is distinctively Japanese.
It's truly enjoyable to see fresh ingredients turned into fabulous dishes in front of you and to eat as soon as they’re ready. Though Ukai is famous for wagyu steak, I'd definitely recommend everyone try rock salt steamed abalone. For the last dish of your course, so-men(thin Japanese noodle) rather than standard garlic fried rice is recommended.
For beverages, they have a good selection of European wine, and somewhat limited selection of beer and sake. Personally, I enjoyed non-alcohol cocktail, yamamomo cider(red bayberry), which is served as available basis in spring and summer.
Architecturally speaking, the decor is a bit eclectic, Japanese and European style mix, and yet everything seems to fit together nicely.
Private dining rooms are available for a group, and with some help it's wheelchair accessible.
Reservation is not required but strongly...
