Pappelburg — Restaurant in Tokyo

My search for a cafe on my way to Hachioji led me to this gem on Tabelog, a place I knew nothing about beforehand.

As I approached, I was pleasantly surprised by the cafe's charming exterior. The building itself exudes a sense of tranquility, inviting you to unwind and relax.

We were seated at a spacious table for six, and the cafe's decor was delightful. The comfortable seating added to the overall ambiance.

Arriving at 10:30 am, the lunch sets weren't yet available, so we started with drinks. The coffee was superb, the milk tea had a distinctly British flavor, and the tea itself was exceptional. It truly felt like enjoying a royal cuppa in a grand castle.

The lunch sets were a culinary delight. We sampled a sandwich set, a pizza set, and a pasta set, each with perfectly prepared main courses and sides.

Of course, we couldn't resist trying the famous pudding dessert. It was simply adorable!

八王子みなみの駅から東京環状沿い御殿峠にあるお城！！？ いや変な城じゃなくて。 本物の城！？ こちらは1991年にオープンした『パペルブルグ 』。この凄い建物は喫茶店なんです！！

外観、入り口も凝ったガーデニング造りなんですが、、、中はすげーーお城だーー！！ アンティーク家具や装飾品が並び、 中世の南ドイツにあった騎士の館をモチーフにして、喫茶店のために一から建てられた建物だそう。

素晴らしい外装や内装は、2年ほどかけて国内外からこだわって集めたレンガや木材を使って、イギリスやドイツの建築をモチーフにデザインされています。 床板に船の甲板の板が使われていたり、日本家屋の廃材に彫刻を施したものを柱にしていたり、細部までとことんこだわられています。 家具もオープン時に職人さんに一から作ってもらったため、世界観が統一されてます。34年間手入れされて長持ちさせてますね。 1948年製のスタンウェイ＆サンズのグランドピアノも現役で稼働し、音楽会が催されているそうです。

館内外の壁一面に描かれているのは 近くにある多摩美大の先生が描いた本格的フレスコ画技法で忠実に描かれたグリム童話の「命の水」だそうです。『パペルブルグ』のコーヒーが、「命の水」であるようにと、先代店主の願いが込められているそうです。

2012年に日本テレビドラマ『VISION 殺しが見える女』や2023年放送の日本テレビドラマ『ゼイチョー「払えない」にはワケがある」』で本郷奏多さんと山田杏奈さんが話をした喫茶店として登場しています。

◼︎リンツァートルテ　660円 オーストリアの銘菓であるリンツァートルテ。 うーん！スパイス・ハーブの香り、ジャムの酸味（自家製のフランボワーズ、レッドカラントのジャム）、絶妙な配合だな。 お子様にはクセが強いですが、、これは大人にはサイコー過ぎる！ 量販的なケーキには無い、このスパイスの鮮烈さ！ 焼菓子レベルの高さがここに詰まってます！ （北海道産全粒粉小麦粉に白胡麻を練った自家製スイーツ、挽き立てのスパイス、ハーブ、ナッツを使ってるそう）

※ リンツァートルテ タルト型にスパイス入りの生地を敷き込み、ラズベリーやレッドカラントなどの赤い実のジャムをのせたお菓子。 オーストリア・リンツ地方が発祥といわれており、1653年の文献にはすでに登場しており、世界最古のトルテという説も。

This was actually my second attempt to visit! The first time, I went with my partner, but it was a holiday, and the car park was full, so we had to give up. This time, though, I tried again, and luckily, there was space.
