Isokura Yuda — Restaurant in Yamaguchi

A fantastic local Yudaonsen izakaya, conveniently located to all the major hotels and ryokan in the middle of the city (especially Matsudaya, it's less than a block away)!

I had the joy to eat dinner here in 2022 and again last month in 2025. The only issue with Isokura Yuda is that you really, really, REALLY need to make a reservation for dinner - they were constantly turning away patrons because they were full when I was there (it was Golden Week, however). Also, you better be prepared to speak some limited Japanese - the staff is EXTREMELY busy, and don't have time to try to help you translate the menu.

What I loved most about this izakaya was the lively and energetic/frenetic atmosphere (complete with live fish tank, etc) and the super fresh fish and seafood served. Delicious, plentiful, and reasonably priced. What more could you ask for?

Well, one thing - again, none of the staff spoke any English, hence I received TWO nama biru right off the bat - I think I ordered it that way, yeah, probably so??? I guess so.... hahaha, I drank them together, mottaianai janai!

If I'm wandering through Yudaonsen again (and I will be so in 2 months from now!), I'll be sure to get there EARLY to make a dinner reservation at Isokura...

The three of us walked in and were asked how many? We told him there were three of us. He then went in to the kitchen and came back out and said there was no room for us. The place was COMPLETELY EMPTY except for two people who were sitting at the bar. Could it be that we were turned away because we were not Japanese?? Sadly, yes. Shame on...
