As a person who has been to Narikura in Minami-Asagaya, Tonta in Toshima, and Katsuretsu Tei Shinshigai in Kumamoto I was very excited to try the most recommended and highly decorated tonkatsu restaurant in Osaka.

Drove an hour from inner Osaka to set a reservation at around 9AM. (They stated they put both the AM and PM reservations in the morning per their website, but only the AM sign sheet was available) An employee was kind enough to tell me to come back at 2PM because I didn't have a Japanese telephone number.

The restaurant is located on the outer edge of Osaka. There is not a lot to do around the area, except for a legendary coffee maker close by (Cafe Munch, highly recommend). Waited for about 5 hours and came by around 2PM.

Came as a party of 3, ordered the Tokyo-X (most excited about), Miyazaki Aji-buta, and Kagoshima kuro-buta prawn sets and 1 croquette.

15 seats and very tight walking spaces. Service was prompt and attentive.

But you come for the pork. The chefs' personal representation of their pork and their technical understanding of frying.

Listening to the pork, getting sledgehammered, and fried in a dead silent restaurant set an interesting tone for the meal.

We all shared a piece of each others pork set. Almost 1/3 of my cutlet (Kagoshima kuro-buta) was just fat and gristle. Aji-buta was drier but ok. Tokyo-x was also dry but ok. I think that the Tokyo-x was semi frozen when it was fried because it was on the rougher side. Shrimp was good, but smaller than the other restaurants stated above. Croquette was solid, nothing to write about.

The sides were solid. The tsukemono was very good. Tea was good.

I am particularly disappointed at the meal in a few different aspects. Maybe a language miscommunication, but if I knew that the reservations were separated, I would have chosen the evening time so I can do stuff in Osaka and drive over in the evening time.

Our party felt as if they gave us the cuts that had a significant amount of gristle because we were tourists and couldn't tell the difference. It looked like we were given the bad cuts when looking at the other diners' dishes.

I hate writing reviews in general, but this meal just made me sad. At 14,000 yen (roughly $100 usd) it was not worth the price or inconvenience. Maybe others will have a better time, but we felt underwhelmed and...

Having heard so much about this Tonkatsu restaurant, it was a dream come true to visit it today (on a Saturday) with my family.

Reached the restaurant at about 720am and was number 7 in queue. At 830am, we were prompted to write our names & the no. of people dining.

It wasn’t an issue making a reservation without a Japanese mobile number. Although the staff spoke very basic English, it was good enough to make the reservation. I was told to come back at about 11.30am.

Ordering was smooth and we were ushered in close to 12pm when the first group of diners had finished their food.

We ordered a mix of every type of pork that was available. Tokyo-X was easily the best of the bunch. To keep it simple - it was soooooooo good!

Not sure when I will be returning to Osaka again. I hope I will be able to return again one day.

P.S. another diner (foreigner) feedback that he felt unwelcome by the staff. I didn’t feel any of that though. In fact, the staff took a paper to write down the English word when I had difficulty understanding what...
