Reading the other reviews all I can say is wow. Its like people expect absolute perfection on a shoestring budget. Anything less garners a 1 Star review from them. Just came here today on a sunday and I was blown away. I don't think I've ever been to a nicer place that was open to the public in my life.
The lighting at night is amazing, the decor here is traditional and classy but feels clean and modern. The food was most definitely expensive and honestly not anything that blew me away but it should be understood that when you come to a place like this you are paying for the ambiance, decor, service and an "exclusive", classy experience.
Waitstaff were very polite and professional and attentive. Cake prices, and prices in general were, as people state pretty high but I think the intention there is to make the location somewhere special and a little more exclusive so that makes sense.
So far in Nairobi this has been the coolest place that I've visited and though I initially had zero or little interest in visiting the Karen Blixen museum I found myself reading her Wikipedia page when I got home and now Intend to visit the museim before leaving Kenya. Even the gate guard, both actually (different ones when I ararrived from.when I left) were professional yet carismatic, approachable and shared positive energy with me.
Must visit place before leaving Nairobi if you are visiting. Probably better to visit as a single person or a couple going for coffees and sharing a main course than going with a party of 8-12+ and eating until everyone is bursting at the seams unless your wallet can handle it. That said we did two coffees, a liter of water, two appetizers, one main meal and one soup and spent $67 USD including taxes. I feel like thr price was more than fair. Are people expecting that to be...
ย ย ย Read moreWe went to the restaurant for coffee and cake. We expected something special - considering the prices higher than in most European traditional patisserie (a piece of cake is 1600,โ). The service was friendly but very slow; and obviously bad or not trained at all and very inexperienced. We waited about 30 minutes for the coffee. Coffeepots were not clean - one had even red sauce on the outside so I asked for a replacement. We waited about 10 minutes more for the three pieces of different cakes. The presentation was nice (but not a wow effect). All three of us experienced a strange taste, nearly simultaneously. It was a taste of chlorine or some kind of cleaning product. You could even smell the chlorine. After we complained to our waitress, it took another 15 minutes until a head waiter came who apologised and told us that the manager would comes. This took another 5-10 minutes. He confirmed that the cake was not good and asked if we wanted to order something else which we denied. We asked for the invoice - another 10 minutes of wait. Instead of inviting us (considering that this chlorine could be harmful) they just took off the cake from the bill. The worst gastronomical experience of our 2.5 weeks in Kenya (and the most expensive too); on our last day before...
ย ย ย Read moreWe went to the karen blixen restaurant, we did not stay at the hotel. Beautiful location in a beautiful well kept garden. The food was good. Three of us ordered fish and chips and one of us a burger, both dishes although pricey they were good. Our biggest let down however was the service. Both dishes that we ordered came with French fries. There were four of us and they brought us 1 tiny sauce cup with ketchup barely enough for 1 person. Right away we requested for 2 more although you would think that for the price we paid for food we could each have our own. Then we spent our whole meal waiting for our ketchup to come and on 3 occasions we asked and even had to get up almost to the kitchen to ask again and again for ketchup. Finally by the time the ketchup arrived we were all basically done with our meals. Then we wanted to order more drinks but there were no waiters around to order from. Our waitress only came back quickly to bring us our bill. For such a high end restaurant the quality of service does not match in a place where they charge you 900 shillings for a scoop of ice cream, you would expect much better service. Unfortunately it's not the first time we encountered...
