Char-Choma Restaurant — Restaurant in Shanzu ward

I went there for lunch with my family after the place had been recommended by a friend. On arrival the place looks great - decor, furniture, lighting etc plus it’s by the beach so great views! The food must be ordered at the counter depending on the type of meat and weight based on the farm to table idea that it boasts.

We ordered 3 burgers and a panini. The burgers took over 45mins to be prepared, these were then served cold. 2 were sent back to the kitchen. My panini didn’t arrive until an hour and 15mins later after I complained to the manager. The remaining burgers arrived then too! Which meant we sat down for lunch at ended up eating our meals so late. Not only that we also didn’t eat together as a family because of all poor service from the kitchen. The manager then felt after serving food late and once our plates were picked to send us a complimentary bowl of roast potatoes! Absolutely ridiculous!! We did not accept these because we had no room to eat anything after being served lunch late and also had eaten full meals which in addition were again not served hot!!

We did ask the waitress to pass this on to the manager. Rightfully so, we were not prepared to pay full price for late and cold food!

The comical part of this is that they still send us complimentary birthday cake pieces to the table with no bill!

On proceeding to leave, in order to force payment at the desk because they didn’t want to bring the bill to us, the manager gave us a discount of only a few drinks - 1bottle of water, a milkshake and a beer!!

They felt this was appropriate! Whilst I am sure people have had good experiences, my family and I fail to see how they serve hot food to anyone in such an establishment. The service from the manager is all for show and pathetic. The staff didn’t even want to give the name of the manager despite me asking for it.

We visited Char-Choma with a group of 11 adults and 3 children for lunch on a Monday afternoon. The setting is beautiful, right by the beach. Unfortunately, this is where the positives ended. No printed menus, you need to scan a QR code and look from your phone. This would be ok if one could complete the order this way. But there’s no ordering food from the table (not through the phone or through the waitress), you have to walk all the way inside and queue up at the counter. Only to find out that half the options were not available, and some take ridiculously long to prepare (the counter advised not to order chicken wings as they take 50min). You can’t order drinks from the counter, you have to walk back to table for that. The service was poor and the staff acted like they didn’t want to be there. The waitress didn’t recognise some of the options on their menu and had to go ask the bartender. When she came back with the drinks for others, she had completely forgotten to ask. One of the smoothies took an hour to arrive. The food was average at best; some of the burgers were missing bacon and egg (standard inclusions in Texas burgers). The chicken skewers were overcooked and dry, and chips were a bit soggy. We requested to see the manager to discuss about the issues, but were told the manager is not available.
