Central Cafe — Restaurant in Jelgava

There aren’t many dining options in Jelgava, so we decided to try Central Cafe, as it appeared to be a somewhat higher-end restaurant.

We sat outside on the terrace, which was clean and charming. We had our dog with us, and the waitress immediately brought him a fresh bowl of water—thank you for that!

We ordered cocktails as aperitifs, which were well made, and there was a good variety to choose from. We also ordered main courses along with wines to pair with them.

However, when the food arrived, the waitress didn’t bring the wines for some odd reason. I had to go inside to ask for them, letting my food get cold in the meantime. Perhaps she noticed we hadn’t finished our cocktails and assumed we didn’t want the wine yet—but she could have asked whether to bring the wines now or later.

The most disappointing part was the food. The prices were high-end, but the quality didn’t match. The sous vide duck breast was completely overcooked. I don’t understand the point of using sous vide if the meat is going to be ruined afterward by overcooking. On top of that, the skin wasn’t crispy. Quality of the food is average. Looks better than tastes. Burgers made from frozen patties (very unacceptable), octopus salad from frozen fried paper thin octopus slices. Not well executed. If pricing would be 20-30% less it would seem rather acceptable, but at prices higher than some Riga good restaurants its out of balance.

Staff also has their party all time at bar, they stand together, talk and its not something good restaurants allow.

Restaurant is located within relatively large hotel for this city and naturally they can charge extra and not worry so much about quality, if you stay in hotel and just need food its expensive for quality but can work, but if you walk the city or are local then there is better...

Very high quality food. Don’t know why but took me by surprise. Everything was freshly prepared and beautifully served. Lovely outdoor seating area with a well kept garden as well as a play area for children. Even though there’s the main road right on the side, you do not notice it at all. The fish was lovely but do bare in mind it comes with its head still attached and the bones are not removed.
