We visited the good old Lau Pa Sat (่ๅทดๅน) one evening while we went for our walk on Saturday evening. We circle back after our walk at around 7pm and the "satay" street is packed so we settled on a seat close to the exit of the main building itself. It will be cooler than those inside the building.
Right off the bat we realized the tables are not numbered. So you will have to collect your food after you ordered. True enough.. if the store is popular, they will hand you a beeper thingy and when it goes off that means you can collect your food from the store. Other stores will have a number printed on the receipt.. you can then estimate or ask the store how long it takes. Other stores that are less popular or drink stores you basically order and wait for a few minutes to collect.
The grilled (BBQ) food was pretty good, including the Otah from the store. The Lao Fu Zi (่ๅคซๅญ) Fried Kway Teow seems popular with a long queue. I joined the queue with about 8 persons in front of me. It took about 20-25mins to get to my turn as others were ordering several different variety. For me.. just the Fried Kway Teow please.. my fiancรฉe and I are not big eaters. We received our number and was told to return in at least 15-mins time to collect our order. I then proceeded to order the Kebab which I just waited at the store for about 10-mins. As you can probably guess there wasn't a queue. I went back to Lao Fu Zi after about 35-mins and my food was ready for collection. Typically Fried Kway Teow is darker in color due to the black soy sauce they used. The store offered white fried kway teow so we decided to give it a go. It's not bad.. just nothing fancy.
If you have a bigger group of people it will be much better to sample different variety of food as there are many. We didn't get to try the satay which is the signature food for that place due to the minimum quantity to order is 10-stick per flavor. So imagine there's pork, beef, lamb, chicken etc.
The price is a little higher than the typical food court. Previously I avoided this place due to the limited selection and more of a tourist place. Now the changes are welcoming.. heat dissipation is much better and more variety. I will visit again especially if there's guest from overseas. It's a good place to let them sample different food on offer...
ย ย ย Read moreLau Pa Sat is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the vibrant street food culture of Singapore. Located in the heart of the Central Business District, this historic hawker center, housed in a beautifully restored Victorian-era building, offers a delightful mix of local flavors and culinary traditions.
As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the enticing aromas of various dishes being prepared. The ambiance is lively and bustling, filled with the sounds of sizzling woks and cheerful chatter. The layout is straightforward, with numerous stalls offering a wide variety of dishes, from traditional favorites to modern twists.
One of the highlights of my visit was the satay stalls, where I enjoyed perfectly grilled skewers of chicken and beef served with a rich peanut sauce. They were incredibly flavorful and cooked to perfection. I also sampled some classic local dishes like Hainanese chicken rice and laksa, both of which were delicious and satisfying.
The seating area is spacious, with both indoor and outdoor options. I opted for an outdoor table, allowing me to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere while savoring my meal. The evening ambiance is particularly enjoyable, with the surrounding area coming alive as the sun sets.
Prices at Lau Pa Sat are very reasonable, making it a great spot for budget-conscious travelers and locals alike. Itโs perfect for a casual meal or a quick bite between exploring the city.
One small note: it can get quite crowded during lunch hours and in the evenings, so arriving early or during off-peak times can enhance the experience.
Overall, Lau Pa Sat is a fantastic place to indulge in Singaporeโs rich culinary scene. The combination of delicious food, lively atmosphere, and historic charm makes it a standout destination. I left with a satisfied palate and a desire to return for more! Highly recommended for food lovers and anyone wanting to experience authentic...
ย ย ย Read moreThe place is nice in architecture but my rating is because of some unhappy experiences. Firstly in 2023 I paid 10 SGD for fried Kway tiao after the NDP show. I never knew that the place is run by Kopithiam. I have the fairprice app but I didn't use it for the discount. There was no signs and banners to indicate that the place is run by Kopithiam and can use fairprice. Secondly in 1 Jul 2024 I messaged via FB Lau pa sat channel on the details about their 130 years promotion Mondays but they ignored me. Arrogant attitude and wanted to hide that they are run by low class Kopithiam.
Edit Their admin finally replied 10 Jul 2024. Probably after reading this. I was there 22 Jul 2024. Had difficulties finding which store took part in the Monday promotion. Went to a store number 7 satay they said they not involved and asked me to find management. It was about 540 pm. Went to drink store asked where was management. She couldn't tell me just pointed me outside, she also not sure which store doing promotion. Later went to another store, they managed to point me to a store with black shirt ppl. I was there at the correct store FC7 6 pm but a black shirt ppl sternly asked me to go away as they started at 7 pm and did not want me to be on the ROAD. So I went to eat other things, when I came back 635 pm a queue had formed of about 20 people and all were standing on the ROAD. Later a dispute occurred when a lady wanted to stop queue cutting from happening behind her, I noted staff generally did not side with her. I think it was someone protecting a space for someone else. Quite disappointing performance of the staff. In fact one young staff openly said he won't be handling such matter with a smirk on his face before walking off. Overall quite an unhappy situation. In my photo the stern staff was the bald guy, he was handling dispute raised by pink shirt auntie who was against...
