I'm not much of a fan of prawn mee but I can appreciate one that's extraordinarily prepared and garnished, not to mention exceptionally tasty.
This place was rather disappointing. It's actually located smack dab in a local village neighborhood and there are no views to enjoy from the restaurant.
Ayu's main feature is its signature prawn mee and you can order the standard serving of three medium sized prawns or the "special version", which is nothing but an additional three prawns added (six altogether).
Even then, the prawns were placed and hidden under the noodles which I found to be unorthodox. Initially I thought that the prawns were going to be served separately as if they were the highlight of the meal!
While other prawn mee dishes that you see have the prawns decorated on top of the noodles, the cooks at this eatery probably found it amusing to hide them underneath the noodles and condiments.
The gravy itself is passable, neither thick nor too spicy. Nothing special. You could probably make the gravy at home yourself, if you're an experienced cook.
A friend of mine wanted to eat here so we followed his suggestion, but personally I would be returning as a customer. Forget about great views and a conducive atmosphere as there are none. You're here to...
Read moreThis is not our 1st visit. Let me warn you that this is NOT the place for people on a DIET mode coz it will be such a waste for this seafood prawn galore and you'll be there just for see food purpose :). Recommended dish to offer mee udang (prawn noodle), nasi goreng (noodle fried rice) udang and my choice maggie udang ( instant noodle with prawn). The prawns are fresh, sweet and juicy. I guessed this is one of their advantage of the nearby fishermen village / market. As for drinks you can have hot and cold drinks especially to cool that taste bud with that icy apple asam boi juice or fruit juices that they have to offer. Clean and conducive environment for the family. Only thing is limited parking space is on the roadside. So make sure you be there early to avoid the hassle in finding a spot. Read moreThe Malay version of the “Har Meen” or “Hokkien Mee” in the local dialect. Definitely unique to this part of the island, State and country. Sequestered within the village of Teluk Kumbar on the south side of Penang amongst a mixed Malay-Chinese residential neighbourhood is this well known purveyor of the ubiquitous prawn noodle.
Each plate comes with four big crustaceans, hard boiled egg, fried shallots, yellow noodles and a squeeze of calamansi. The thickish broth is sweetish, slightly spicy and very umami. First ate here probably 6 years ago which left a lasting impression ever since. Finally got to enjoy it again after a colleague...
