Saw mostly locals dining here, and its quite a distance from the town area. The prices are relatively affordable, and we tried a few of their signature dishes.
We ordered quite a bit for a group of 3, and here’s our take: ———
🥟 上海小笼包 Shanghai Soup Dumplings The soup inside these dumplings is tremendously overflowing! I was quite surprised at how big the buns were. Usually, xiao long bao are small and pop in your mouth, but these are significantly larger for the price. Three of these are actually quite filling. The broth, however, wasn’t as rich or porky as I expected—it felt a little diluted compared to other places. Regardless, this was a really good xlb
🍚 古法糯米鸡 Glutinous Rice with Chicken (6.50RM/ea) This blew my mind. I was surprised by how much flavor was infused in the rice. Typically, I imagine this as just a very oily glutinous rice dish with chicken, but the mushroom flavors were strong, and the rice was perfectly cooked and soaked with flavor. Definitely one of the main best-sellers here. Will order again—the portion size is generous.
🥢 脆皮滑肠粉 Crispy Roll Cheong Fun (8.50RM/ea) This was seriously impressive. I loved the myriad of textures—from the slightly crisp outer layer to the soft inner roll, combined with the pork or chicken inside. It was rich in flavor and very filling, perfect for sharing.
🥟 鱼子滑烧卖 Pork Dumpling with Fish Roe (6.00RM/ea) Pretty good. It had a slight mushroomy smell, which I was okay with, and the texture was excellent. I would definitely order this again.
🦐 白玉鲜虾饺 Fresh Shrimp Dumplings (7.50RM/ea) The shrimp dumplings were wholesome, with a nice succulent crunch. The prawn wasn’t pasty and tasted fresh. A safe and tasty option.
🥮 港式叉烧包 Barbecued Pork Bun (7.50RM/ea) Made fresh, with a great dough-to-filling ratio. The bun was soft, not too thick, and had a satisfying portion size.
🍳 XO炒萝卜糕 Stir-Fried Radish Cake with XO Sauce (9.50RM/ea) This was pretty nice. The bean sprouts portion was generous, and the radish cake itself was also substantial. Slightly doughy in my opinion, but the umami flavors were strong, and it had that delicious wok-hei taste.
🟤 招牌腐皮虾 Crispy Beancurd with Shrimps (7.50RM/ea) Pretty standard.
🦐 鲜虾滑肠粉 Fresh Shrimp Cheong Fun (7.50RM/ea) Standard.
🥣 香卤花生粥 Congee with Braised Peanuts (6.50RM/ea) Standard. Very smooth, felt homemade rather than like a typical congee flavor.
☕ 招牌香浓咖啡 Signature Rich Coffee (Cold, 4.50RM/ea) The roasted aroma was strong, which I appreciated. However, it was too sweet for my taste—the sugar overpowered the flavor. The texture was thick and enjoyable, though. Next time, I’ll ask...
Read morePlace: air-conditioned restaurant that specialises in Chinese dim sum (non-halal). There were some hits (i.e. siew mai with herbs and sweet and sour beancurd dim sum), some in between (i.e. char siew pao and siew mai) and some terrible misses for me here (lormaikai). But overall, I'd still come back knowing what to order and what not to next time.
Service: self written order on piece of paper provided on table based on book menu. Call waiter to collect paper orders, then food will be served. Cleaning of used plates and dim sum baskets were a little slow but understandable as only the foreign workers were doing the labour work while the cashier and people standing at the counter were just being ornaments for display. Wrong working attitude in my opinion.
Food: Fried Lobak: the texture and moisture in this dish is spot on, however the taste profile is somewhat average in my opinion. The spicy level is 1/10 (10 being Nandos extra hot peri-peri). The tauge were fresh and not overcooked. Definitely above average, just not great or excellent. Verdict: 3/5.
Shrimp chee cheong fun: loved the texture and taste in this dish. The amount left me felt wanting and craving for more! But well done on the shrimp paste too! Loved it and wasn't too spicy (1/10). Verdict: 4/5.
Lormaikai: bad...just bad...calorie wasting dish. Everything about this dish was bad. Verdict: 0.5/5.
Siew mai with herbs: wow...this is not something you get everyday or other places. Good combo and idea. Loved it. Verdict: 3.9/5.
Sweet and sour beancurd dimsum: loved the flavour packed into this dish and it's texture. The sauce was the standout for me here. Just the right about of sweet and sour I must say! Verdict: 4/5.
Pao: hmm...so so in this department. Not something I'd come to eat if coming again. Below average....
Read moreThis is my favourite place for dim sum. Though it is not listed in top 10 places for dim sum in JB, i feel it is better than others in the list. Variety wise might be limited but it’s unique. Their signature is the crispy chee cheong fun, soft outside and crispy inside . I have never tasted this before elsewhere, at least not in the top 10 list. Also, their sweet and sour rolls are different from others. It’s thinner and longer and the skin has a unique taste. The radish cake is in bigger chunks and even so, it’s tasteful. Pork ribs is also wonderfully flavoured and not the usual dark sauce type. My girl loves their signature fried rice. Well, only wish list is to have fish ball. It is also the only dim sum place that you don’t find any fishball. But their other stuff are enough to make up for it. Do come early if you don’t want to wait too long. The queue can be quite long and today we are lucky, it’s raining, so there...
