All About Pahang - Kuantan
This was another trip to Kuantan recently, and the usual "western food" request by the young ones. Didn't want to go to Cherating Steak House and La Casa wasn't opened that day, I quickly texted my friend and he prompted me to Bay Leaf, a popular and established western restaurant in town.
Luckily we made reservation earlier as the entire restaurant was packed that day. They used to have alfresco and air-conditioning section but they have since covered up the entire restaurant.
◾Complimentary bread - love it when the breads were warm. ◾Pumpkin soup & onion soup - lovely start to the dinner. ◾Sizzling chicken 'Bay Leaf' - served on piping hot sizzling plate on a bed of onion, the black pepper sauce was lovely to go with the tender and moist poultry. The downside was that the papadom was not crunchy, in fact borderline soft. ◾Fisherman Choice - grilled salmon, red snapper, squid, prawn and Mornay oyster. Served with coleslaw and chips with cocktail sauce. Everything was executed competently. ◾Chicken & Beef Fajitas - grilled tender of chicken on sizzling skillet served with warm tortilla, tomato salsa, sour cream, cheddar cheese and sauteed onion. The kids loved these so much and nothing was left at the end.
Brought a bottle of wine and corkage applies.
Bay Leaf is definitely in my permanent list of western restaurant to go while in Kuantan. My friend told me that the chef had enough experience working as a chef for many restaurants before striking...
Read moreIt started with the reservation issue. The server on the line didn't know what to do and put the phone down. I had to call again to book the table. Arriving, they didn't have the reservation. The lady in charge managed to get us a table, though. We ordered as soon as possible as they restaurant was filling up. The server wasn't properly trained. We asked for ice water, and he replied hot water? After the orders were taken, there were no cutlery settings. The mushroom soup is quite standard with a bun and a real tiny butter. Prawn cocktail is again the standard prawns with cocktail sauce. Overall, the food standard is not up to par. The poached salmon sauce is the classic Volute. However, it is rather bland. A bit of additional seasoning or a touch of herbs would have done justice to the dish. The mushroom sauce that came with the mixed grill lacked flavour. I am not too sure if it was packed that caused the food quality to be more desired or just old-school cooking style. Nonetheless, the place is packed with a lot of local clientèle. No to mention that they also...
Read moreI visited this place with high expectations on food and service but it let me down. It was father's day so I reserved a table ahead and went there early. While I was still calming my toddler who was sobbing, the server asked me twice if I was ready to order. I haven't even put down my bag yet. Ordered the highly recommended mushroom soup, no different from powder instant soup, can't find any bit of mushroom in there. It becomes watery after a while. Beef in the mixed grill was tough. Fisherman choice not really worth the price and nothing to shout about. In fact foods were quite bland and dry and you can tell it was very instant made like western food stall in kopitiam but not a kopitiam price. I expected something more quality for the price I paid (eg: RM60 for fisherman choice like in the pix). Overall not a good experience. Most probably not...
