All About Pahang - Kuantan
If there's one restaurant in Kuantan that I will not miss everytime I go back to my birthtown, it'll be Hwa Ang. From the fateful moment when my associate in Kuantan brought me to this restaurant which they deemed as their 'canteen', I was instantly hooked due to their simple and unpretentious way of cooking.
Hwa Ang is a basic restaurant located below some old low-cost flats and specialize in old school teo chew seafood dishes. They are opened for both lunch & dinner. A word of caution - it can get pretty hot & stuffy eating there during lunch time.
◾spicy fish fillet porridge - my first time eating this and loved it to the max! I saw next table ordering this and promptly asked the same dish. Appetizing spicy comfort food - ask them to omit the coriander if you don't like it as they are quite generous with this. ◾braised shark meat - lots of ginger inside the soup making every slurp tummy warming affair. ◾deep fried flat fish - can't get enough of the sweet tasting flesh of this fish. ◾Stir fried sweet potato leaves
Note: Their claypot crab rice is my favourite but I didn't order this time. And if you're lazy to de-shell the crab, or worried that you might accidentally bite the shell.. they have claypot prawn rice.
Keep expectations low and everything will...
Read moreWe came here rather late, about 7.30pm. Why I said late is because they close rather early. We didn’t realize that until we saw them started to clear the tables and kept them inside. But we were recommended to try their crab claypot rice. Which wasn’t a great choice when we have less than 1 hour to eat.
The crab claypot rice was unique but taste wise, we don’t quite like it. One thing was because a lot of the broken crab shells in the rice, so ended up hurting ourselves by accidentally chomping down on the hard shell stuck between the rice. So I would say that one does need to be really careful eating it.
We ended up not eating half of the crab, and just did our best to eat most of the rice. Felt wasted, but no choice.
The bitter gourd salted egg does not taste like the typical dish. The bitter gourd was really bitter. lol. It was fresh, no doubt. But guessed it was not thoroughly washed with salt to remove the excess bitterness.
Last but not least, the slipper fish, which was my first time having it. It was nice, similar to ikan bulus, but flatter and crispier.
Overall, food was okay, but don’t expect too much. Definitely something different, but do come...
Read moreIt's a Chinese restaurant with a slightly run-down vibe. The surroundings are also questionable and feel a bit dangerous. Cleanliness wise can expect an old Chinese place like this la.
Food, okay, it's quite special. I've never tried a flat fried fish like this, I don't even know what fish it is, haha. The shark skin dish is also quite interesting. The fish porridge is also very flavourful. Overall, it was an experience I never really had before. Bitterguord is just okay, was a bit bitter, I think if they cooked a little longer, it'd be less bitter.
