Manzen Izakaya Japanese Cuisine — Restaurant in Penang

Came here for dinner and loved the quality of the Japanese food served here. We ordered the Salmon Lover Teishoku set and found it to be really worth for money. The salmon ochazuke was pretty good and both salmon and ebi sushi aburi was tasty as well. Personally I felt that the freshness of the salmon could be improved but my husband said that it was very fresh for him. The star dish of the evening was definitely the truffle and scallop chawanmushi; it was hands down the best chawanmushi that I have ever tasted in a Japanese restaurant. I love the umami taste of the truffle that goes well with the egg and the sweetness of the scallop also complements the chawanmushi as well. Would definitely return when craving for Japanese food. Two of us had dinner at Manzen on a Sunday evening. The place was moderately filled with customers. Ordered Unagi rice and Hokkaido Ramen. Ramen soup was tasty but would have been better if it had a slightly thicker consistency and the pork slices were very well marinated and tender. We rate it 4.5 out of 5. The unagi rice was well prepared. The sauce was well balanced delicious. We would have given it full points if the unagi pieces had a crispier texture on the surface. We rate this 4. Manzen Izakaya gave me a welcome surprise in terms of food quality and taste. It has been a while since I've been to an Izakaya. I did not have high expectations because I just strayed into this place and that too in a very new development in mainland Penang. Everything I ordered, from the octopus legs, to the bento to the sashimi and ebi tempura were made to near perfection. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner here.
