I can’t imagine how a business that supposedly stood the test of time can go so wrong. My first impression of the place: dodgy.

However we thought to still give it a go since it was a convenient pitstop. Plus we were hungry.

There was a reasonable amount of wait for a seat as their tables (well spaced out) were all occupied with patrons.

Thank God we decided to try one bao on the spot before we decided on packing more home (as per originally intended). For an item that started all the hype, it definitely missed the mark. Even the bao at any random coffee shop would taste better! It was average at best. And somehow the bao got cold pretty fast. Baos should be served steaming hot.

Next dish that arrived : Hainanese Chicken Chop. I’m so sorry to state that it is the worst tasting chicken chop I’ve had in my life. The predominant taste? SUGAR. That’s all I tasted - syrupy sweet chicken. Please don’t get me started on the mash potatoes. A humble request to the owner: how about considering serving your dishes on proper plates and utensils instead of disposable plastic ones? It makes the dishes look way cheap and does not justify the price tag not to mention our poor environment. However maybe the disposables were used due to hygiene factor, I’m not sure.

Sigh, “Hainanese” coffee came next - again nothing special to say about it except that we would saved a chunk of cash by drinking a packet of 3-in-1 at home. Please, at least froth up the coffee or add in more coffee so that you can actually TASTE coffee instead of whatever was served.

The final shocker: the bill! Oh my goodness, for the quality of food served on disposable containers, it far justifies the amount! It’s kind of a rude shock that you can get far better tasting quality (not to mention authentic Hainanese) food at a better RESTAURANT/ CAFE (with ambiance) for a FRACTION of the price in KL.

Thoroughly disappointed.

I hope the owner does something fast to turn it around. Logic is simple: if you want to charge premium prices, please have the goods (and service) to back it up. It’s a shame to see years of tradition flushed down the toilet with nothing left than a nostalgic branding that’s hanging...

Quality really have gone south. The once delicious pau is not recognizeable. Maybe its my bad luck; i got very tasteless beef curry pau. Powdery and flaky due to dry curry powder inside. Even Plus RnR pau is better. Apologize to all pau aficianados in Malaysia already!

Meal is overrated and overpriced. Trust me on this. Seeing the price one would expect excellent taste and portion. You will be very unsatisfied after eating and paying the price. Meatball is more than the actual beef. They really cutting corner here.

Service. Is bad. Foreign worker managing the restaurant. Table service is late. And food delivery is late. Apparently the staff forgot my order. And no apologies. Just poker face. I tried to strike up conversation to gauge staff chattiness. Apparently they all too tired and just want to go home already. Monotonous and unmotivated.

Atmosphere is.... so so. People smokes so not for family with children tho. At least is clean but nothing intresting here. Seems like an abandoned shop ready to be turned into coffin shop. No effort in updating the decor or at least making it comfortable for customers. Nostalgia much? Looking at your service and meals... that nostalgia thing lost on it.

Yik Mun only...

This is the first time I came to visit the famous "Tanjung Malim Pau" shop, and I was shocked to find that it was full and well attended by all walks of lives, and we had to wait to be seated!! 😱😱

What that actually meant was, we had to look for patrons who looked like they were almost finished eating, and then we had to go and stand by that particular table, looking nonchalantly patient..Oh..and with no small talk, please..🤭🤣🤣

After about 15 minutes of waiting, they all caught my drift, and reluctantly stood up looking slightly annoyed...but, with no excuse for not leaving...My wife and I quickly grabbed our seats, before any other waiting customers realized that we were getting a table, as things could turn out rather ugly if left unchecked...🤔☹

I had wanted to try the Hainanese Chicken Chop, but my wife warned me that it could take forever to get our orders, judging from the large crowd. She suggested that we try the Mee Kicap with Yong Tau Foo, and I thought that would be a brilliant idea! Little did I know, it turned out to be the best and most delicious Mee Kicap and fishball soup I have ever tasted!! 😋😋😋This will definitely put all the pretenders to shame, as I will never go back to...

I was raised in Tanjong Malim until I started primary school in Ipoh thus had the honour of eating at Yik Mun since they were a kopitiam in Tanjong Malim town main street. So I cannot honestly review their food as how would I compare how it has changed through the years, from the time the meat filling of their pau was bone in chunks with a different curry taste than now. Or their chinese fried rice actually had the OG peas and frozen vegetables and their hailam noodles. So instead I will give tips on how to get their best version of the quick cook menu items. As far as possible do not go when they are busy and crowded. This is because during this period the food are usually precooked in a big pot, with the prawns also precooked separately. The photos here are those cooked when we are the only customers in the shop. You should be able to see the difference. Hopefully it also shows the steam rising from the dishes denoting individually cooked dishes in wok hei.

Hainanese Comfort Food at Its Best Dropped by Yik Mun on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised — not just by the delicious food, but by how convenient and comfortable the whole experience was. Plenty of parking space, even on a weekend. Ample seating, so no long waits despite the crowd. Now, onto the food — the star of the show: Hainan Fried Mee in Gravy – Tasty and full of wok hei. The noodles had the perfect chew, and the gravy was flavourful without being heavy. Soup Yong Tau Fu – Fresh and well-balanced, with each piece soaking up the savoury broth beautifully. Hainanese Pau – A must-try. Fluffy buns with a generous filling — whether you go for kaya, red bean, or meat, they don’t disappoint. Overall, Yik Mun delivers a solid, nostalgic Hainanese experience. Great place for a relaxed weekend lunch with local flavours that hit the spot. Will definitely return!
