Look, real foodies don't complain about distance. The journey is part of the experience.

Far away from my comfort zones in Ipoh, in fact it's even distant for people in Falim, hidden away in a quiet row of shops, lies a surprise. A restaurant that presents its dishes so extravagantly and histrionically, it's worth the drive alone.

This is M4 Fine Dine, but please don't be intimidated by the words. It's not a RM500-ish, smart casual-only, hoity-toity 7-course degustation with wine pairing. It's simply ala carte, but every dish is dressed up, like a night in the Moulin Rouge. The ambience exudes class, royal blue and gold, but the mood is casual. You're welcome to be yourself. The staff are friendly and accommodating, so don't be afraid to ask questions especially if it's your first time.

Of the food I ordered, all were hits. Maybe I got lucky. The foie gras is adequately seared, with a velvety texture that went perfectly with the strawberry jam. Shocker, yes! The oxtail soup was playfully finished off with cheese bits and brandy spray, adding some tanginess and sweetness to the rich, piquant beef broth. It's brilliant. The oxtail was delightfully meaty too.

As for the main course, the whiskey slow-roasted Iberico ribs, the meat was so tender it fell off the bone. The ribs were packed with flavour and every bite was satisfying. The pipette of whiskey (yes, more fun) added some zest and complemented the rich BBQ sauce well.

Plating is a very strong suit of M4. Every dish is a work of art, with a compelling identity. While most fine-dining plating is minimalist, they go the opposite direction, maximalist if you will lol. You'll be amazed at the photos in the menu and want to see them in real life.

So, what have I not covered? Parking is plenty, portions are good, prices are fair: you can go working class or high end, and you don't have to wait long for orders to arrive, unlike fine dining. I was in and out within 45 minutes. Ta daa review complete.

M4 has been here a short time, but leaves a trail of good reviews, fancy photography and memorable, erm, memories. All in all I was thoroughly impressed and hope to come again soon. There's so much uncovered ground here. I'd love to see their interpretation of seafood risotto, salmon Wellington and good ol' steak. Highly recommended.

Update 23/5/25: truffle mushroom soup and seafood risotto are excellent as expected. Mushroom soup is covered by a large sheet of puff pastry which added to the flavour and texture of the fragrant and thick soup. This ain't Campbell's. As for the risotto, the portion is large, the seafood is fresh and presentable, while risotto is rich, firm with beautiful texture and a nice mild umami flavour to hold the dish together. Another...

May 2025 update

I recently had the pleasure of revisiting M4 Fine Dine in Ipoh for a celebration, and once again, the experience was exceptional. This time, it was made even more memorable by the thoughtful gesture of the chef-owner, who recognized me and offered something special off their hidden menu—a vegetarian version of their Grana Padano Cheese Wheel Pasta.

Watching the dish being prepared was a treat in itself. The chef handled the process with such care and precision, and the moment the fragrance of the melted cheese filled the air, I was practically drooling. The pasta was incredibly tender, clearly homemade, and the Grana Padano cheese added a rich, deep flavor that’s hard to find—especially in Ipoh, where this type of cheese is not easy to come by due to its cost and rarity.

My friends were equally satisfied with their orders, and everyone left with happy stomachs. To top it all off, the owner personally crafted some special drinks for us, adding a personalized and celebratory touch to the evening.

Have been a regular customer for this restaurant since they open. I would say this is one of the must try fine-dine restaurant in Ipoh! Plenty of choices which you can’t really find in other restaurants. Besides, they provide vegetarian food as well. The presentation of the food is always on top notch. However, waitress seems like inexperienced. Perhaps she...

Surprise to find a fine dining restaurant at a relatively remote area in Menglembu-Falim area. Their sign board was simple and inconspicuous, and there wasn’t a side signboard so one can easily missed when driving along the road. Food was of great taste, quite a refreshing experience even when compared to fine dining in bigger cities like KL. They had just opened for 3 months and there was already a crowd when we were there for lunch at 12.00 noon. Heard that the kitchen was manned by a returning chef from a 5 star hotel in Singapore. 5th & 11th October I went back to this restaurant twice within a short span of 6 days. Once I went for chicken chop lunch and the following visit I ordered 12 hours braised lamb shank for dinner. Both were good, but the lamb shank was cooked until it was extremely soft, meaty and tasty. Found that they also had squid ink spaghetti like the one I tasted recently in Venice in their menu. They charged RM88 for it, about 19-20 Euros. Compared to the same dish in Venice, I had to pay 40 Euros. Will try this dish in M4 one day, just to check whether it is of the same quality.
