The best big head prawn I have eaten, everytime I went back to my wife hometown, I'll always looked forward to coming here and enjoy the best meal beside my MIL home-cooked food.
Pan-fried big head prawn (4.75/5) Just this dish alone, I can come back a few time already haha. This is malaysia style dish as they use pork lard, spring onion and soya sauce to pan-fried the prawns. What make this dish so good is that they use live prawns!! So you can confirm the freshness and needless to say, pork lard is the key to the success of this dish but be warn of your cholesterol cause you wouldnt stop!! haha
Four heavenly King (4.5/5) I was surprised when my wife order this dish, what is 4 heavenly king, in my mind I thought it was seafood platter haha since we are in a seafood restaurant. But to my surprise it was 4 different type of vegetables. Petai, eggplant, ladyfinger and long beans. Haha I never like vegetables so much, the combination was perfect. The chef skill was also very good that he knew each characteristic of the vegetables to know which to add first and last to make the whole dish even and equally cooked.
Steam big head prawn (4.5/5) No need to say much about steam live prawns, simple wine, ginger and salt and wala. A perfect dish, I really like the soup of this dish that I finished every drop however we seldom order this dish as our family only has 4 person, if we order the pan-fried, normally we wouldnt order another prawn dish.
Home-made tofu (4.25/5) The home-made tofu like got abit of egg tofu taste. Or is it the skin that they deep fried is coated with egg that gave its eggy taste. Stir-fry minced meat with holland peas and sizzle it on top of the fried tofu.
Sweet and sour pork (3.5/5) The sweet and sour pork is not bad, average. The pork is pretty tender, just that the sauce is nothing to rave about but my MIL like this dish.
Just to note, I like their medium size prawn, big prawns are better for steaming. A...
Read moreTanjung Tualang bring back a lot of nostalgic family trips to a place famous for its large headed fresh water prawns. The prawns had a head that is bigger than it's body. It's a family favourite and I have not had this delicacy for a very long time. So tonight dinner is a trip down memory lane with fond memories of my late father.
There are a number of restaurants that serve this delicacy. In the good old days, they consist mainly of ramshakle wooden buildings. Nowadays if quite a different scenario altogether. The most important criteria for a modern discerning diner is that is it air conditioned. At least for this diner. That pass the first test and the rest of the misses will be somewhat forgiven sins liken plastic table cloth, cutlery dipped in tepid water in a plastic container and a few occasional flies.... On second thoughts maybe not the flies. Perhaps the restaurant will care to invest in an electric flies zapper. Maybe a air citrus fresher will help to notch another star in the atmosphere criteria.
Be that as it may, most diners are here for the prawns cooked in various manner. We had the steamed prawns and the prawns braised in wine. Both came up tops but something is amiss. So how the tastebuds did not register the nostalgia of good old days. A conversation with the staff confirmed my suspicion that the prawns were bred in farms rather than wild caught. It still good food overall withe the steamed fish and fried vegetables and tofu too but if you came all the way for a nostalgic dish of steamed wild caught prawns, you will be disappointed. But as I glanced around there were many happy diners working their way through the prawns. Perhaps I am the only disappointed diner lost in the nostalgia of a dish of steamed Tanjung Tualang Big ...
Read moreRevisited Yew Kei for the few specialties which we were craving for. The river prawns (fried in soya sauce & pork lard as well as steam with egg white & chinese wine) remains very good. Only thing is the prawn size. Only had medium and small sized prawns while our earlier experience had sizes of medium large and large. However, the medium was adequate. Each prawn was about 100g and cost was c.RM12 each. No longer caught in rivers (as the yesteryears) but farmed now. But it is just as good. The other favourites which we ordered are cuttlefish kangkong and oyster omelette remains good. We wanted paku but unfortunately there were none. Opted for some crab in salted egg which were ok for size (medium sized) and tasty. Price was c.RM50 each.
We avoided the crowd by reaching the restaurant at noon. The restaurant filled up quickly thereafter. Parking was ok on the road side.
Service was ok while atmosphere could be improved given the number of flies that irritated us constantly thru the meal. No credit card terminal hence payment is either...
