Sushi King Sandakan: 'A' 5-Star Experience!
This has to be one of the best Sushi King outlets I’ve ever been to! The taste and quality of the sushi are just like how I remember them, absolutely delicious and perfectly suited to my palate. What really impressed me was how the sushi belt was always full, a clear sign that the kitchen and sushi station staff are experienced and highly efficient.
I had a brief chat with one of the sushi station staff, Feviana, and her partner who wears a hijab. Despite being busy preparing sushi, both of them were very friendly and engaging with customers, something I truly appreciated. They also shared that the chef on duty at the time was Chef Federick and his skill was clearly reflected in every dish served.
The service team was equally impressive, efficient, friendly and full of genuine hospitality. I managed to catch the names of two standout staff members: Ema and Siti. Even the cashier was warm and efficient, though I didn’t manage to catch her name (as I was focused on the payment process)
In my opinion, the real key to this outlet’s excellence lies in its management. It’s clear that the senior manager, Puan Norasidah @ Tang, has built an outstanding team. Their service goes beyond just food. It creates a meaningful and memorable dining experience.
My family and I visited on 11 April 2025 around 5 PM and we were truly happy with the entire experience. This restaurant will definitely be one of our regular go-to spots when travelling to Sandakan. Read moreUnfortunately, my recent visit to this restaurant left much to be desired. While the food taste was decent, several issues significantly impacted the overall dining experience.
The service was notably poor. Spoons were not readily available, and the self-service approach for wasabi, where customers took it directly from the running belt and placed it on their tables and never put it back on to running belt. Furthermore, staff failed to notice when the wasabi supply ran out from the running belt, highlighting a lack of attentiveness.
Regarding the food, despite the acceptable taste, the presentation and hygiene were concerning. Many containers were oily and dirty, and some sushi pieces had fallen off without being cleaned up by the staff. Given these issues, I would strongly advise ordering directly from the kitchen for freshly prepared items rather than taking from the belt.
The environment also contributed to an uncomfortable experience. The floor was oily, as was the ordering tablet, which made the space feel unclean and uninviting. Food rating - The Egg Mayo sushi was very good (Crispy and fresh seaweed) compared few times we've been here before. Other such as Karaage and Inari is good as always. Some other menu wasn't available at the time we are here. 4 out of 5
