My lunch at 家乡小馆 (Jiāxiāng Xiǎoguǎn) was a great experience, and it's easy to see why this restaurant has such a reputation. I had heard so much about it and even seen photos of many famous people dining here, including the "God of Cookery" from Hong Kong, Malaysian politicians, and TV host 阿贤 (Ah Xian).
Ordering was a breeze, with the menu clearly displayed on the wall with photos, or you could refer to the printed menu at your table. The food was served impressively fast. While the portion sizes were a little small, the prices were very reasonable. For instance, the brinjal with fish paste was RM24, the unique wintermelon soup was RM18, and the pig leg vinegar was RM23—all very fair prices.

Their signature winter melon soup was flavorful and highly recommended. The smoked chicken was another standout dish—rich in smoky aroma and perfectly tender without being overcooked.
The Patin Buah (水果巴丁王) was decent, though not particularly outstanding. However, I appreciated the use of a clay plate, which helped retain heat better than the more commonly used stainless steel.

However we were not disappointed with the food which turned out to be very delicious. The winter melon soup came in a cooked whole winter melon, was absolutely spot on and nourishing. Other dishes we tried were the fried brinjals with fish paste (excellent), Sambal petai with onions (spicy and delicious) , pork leg stewed in vinegar ( very delicious and balanced taste) , their signature smoked chicken ( chicken was moist and aromatic ) and a vegetable. Highly recommended indeed but might be crowded during peak hours since it is such a...
