Authentic Nyonya Flavors in a Nostalgic Setting
We had the pleasure of hosting a gathering at Nyonya Roof Kitchen with 20 adults and 5 children, and it was an unforgettable experience. The environment was fantastic, spacious, cozy, and filled with nostalgic charm. From vintage decor to old-school memorabilia, the place radiates warmth and character. Bonus points for the kids’ playroom, which kept the little ones entertained while the adults relaxed and indulged.
Now let’s talk about the food absolutely phenomenal. Every dish was a masterclass in authentic Nyonya cooking, rich in flavor and beautifully balanced. You could taste the heritage in every bite, with bold spices, aromatic herbs, and that signature depth that defines true Peranakan cuisine.
Here’s what we ordered:
🥟 Pai Tee – Crisp, delicate shells filled with savory goodness. A perfect starter. 🐟 Assam Wangi Fish – My personal favorite. The tangy tamarind gravy was fragrant and layered with flavor, complementing the tender fish perfectly. 🦑 Sambal Squid – Spicy, smoky, and cooked just right. A real crowd-pleaser. 🐐 Mutton Rendang – Another standout. Rich, slow-cooked, and deeply spiced. The meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender. 🍗 Chicken Ponteh – Comforting and hearty, with a sweet-savory gravy that paired beautifully with rice. 🍳 Nyonya Fried Tau Fu – Crispy on the outside, soft inside. The kids absolutely loved this! 🥬 Jeu Hu Char – A classic stir-fry with shredded vegetables and dried cuttlefish. Earthy and satisfying. 🥚 Omelette Cincalok – Unique and flavorful, with the fermented shrimp adding a punch of umami. 🌼 Chrysanthemum Tea – Light and refreshing, a great palate cleanser. 🍧 Cendol – A sweet ending to the meal. Creamy coconut milk, fragrant gula melaka, and soft green jelly—pure bliss. 🍚 Rice – Steamed to perfection, the ideal base for all the rich gravies.
Every dish was served with care and authenticity. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in preserving traditional recipes while delivering a memorable dining experience.

Some of the dishes - ayam buah keluak and pongteh - do come close to what I have been eating in Penang and Melaka. The 3rd best dish was the paku pakis salad - flavours were wonderful but the execution could be much be better (eg the slicing of onions could be finer). The chicken pieces in the ayam buah keluak and pongteh were huge and left whole (eg a whole thigh that was not chopped). Pie tee was normal as was the fried lotus. The fish assam pedas had strange texture - it was a bit like assam laksa broth - and had unusual acidity and a mild bitterness to it (can't pinpoint what - maybe vinegar was used?). Despite the novel way how the chendol was served, it was average and the gula melaka could have been better. We asked for sambal belachan and what came was a bit of a shock. Instead of typical sambal belachan that was thick (either hand pounded or coarsely ground in the blender), we got this little bowl of diluted chilli sauce that did not even come close to what proper sambal belachan should be. We thought we were mistaken and asked again to make sure it was sambal belachan - the answer was yes.
While we had a pleasant meal eating the huge portions of food, somehow the wow factor eluded me. There, but not...
Read moreLast Sunday our family booked this place to celebrate my brother’s birthday here. We wanted to try enjoying our dinner in this private kitchen instead of going to eat at a restaurant. The place was huge with 3 round dining tables n a long table in the living room of this bungalow. There are 2 more smaller dining tables for smaller groups in 2 other rooms on the ground floor. Once we arrived, the chef started cooking our 7 dishes which we had pre ordered. Rice n chrysanthemum tea n drinking water were all replenishable. There was another big family having dinner at the same time with us too. The food came straight from the kitchen. The cost n homely ambience was a plus , adding warmth to our dinner celebration. The appetizers- “ top hats” were crunchy n the fillings were tasty unlike other Nyonya restaurants. The food on the whole was good except that we found some dishes were a bit sweet. If only the chef was not so generous with the sugar, then it would be almost perfect. We also had a sufficient share of the dessert which is iced cendol. They even played the birthday song in Mandarin, English n Cantonese when my brother was about to cut his birthday Inside Scoop ice cream cake. All this while , they played some soft sentimental music in the background while we were having our food. A good place for dining n bonding with...
